SWE Minutes from 11-21-05

Upcoming Events
-Selling leftover tees and undies, week of 11-28
-dinner with Dean Goroff, 11-30
-Southern California Edison site visit, 12-2
-Winter break site visits, week of 1-16
-WEST, Saturday 3-4-06

Opportunity Day
-ended up really well
-started off pretty small and then people came after class
-suggestions: not during class—Weds during seminar time?
-Did they ask about people who were vegetarian? Yes.
Company people too?
-heard Jamie did a good job MCing
-dinner really good—good mix of people at the tables, a lot more girls than guys
-could get more people next year after success this year
-could put up posters and get the word out
-try putting the panel in a smaller room
-companies seemed pretty pleased

Site Visits
-No one here went on the Boeing trip.
-SoCal Edison will be Friday Dec. 2 @ 11 am if anyone's interested.
-winter site visit will now be the first week of school next semester

WEST
-will hand out info to give to profs next week
-Baker still not sure—should ask her about using Logan instead
-NSBE thinking about outreach, would like to try and get more black students at WEST—fine by us as long as they're girls

Selling T-shirts and Undies
-will be selling during lunch and dinner in Hoch-Shanahan next week
-sign up sheet went around
-We have probably half of a big box left of shirts and undies.
-Zane and Jowene will make a poster tomorrow.

Tutoring
-will not start until next semester
-will need to figure out which afternoon once we get our schedules for next semester
-got names of interested people again

Prof Dinners
-dinner with Dean Goroff cancelled, so will be next semester

Miss SWE: Suggestions for next year
-grand finale (kick line or something) at the end
-worked well in Linde, but Greeen Room still may be better
-balloons were good
-should focus on getting the date down and reserving the room
-possibly advise contestants not to go overboard with vulgarity—but be careful because we don't want them not to be vulgar at all
-male judges? could let contestants hit on everyone equally—or could make it obvious judges are cross-dressed as guys
-email sample questions ("You'll get one of these questions.") and then have one surprise question?
-knowing the location probably better for turnout than having a good MC—can advertise sooner
-Career Services can kick us out of the Green Room whenever they want, so should keep that in mind and deal with it
-Do we still want Deren to MC? He's been great, but most of the people won't know him next year. Other ideas: Jacobsen (would be very good, esp for frosh, and probably willing), Duron (wouldn't do it), Dean Cave (good, but possibly awkward even if he's okay with doing it), Dean Chris

Last Meeting of the Semester
-will be 12-5
-wanna do something special, like bowling
-no other ideas
-Monday's usually bad for that kind of stuff
-try for bowling Thursday 12-8
