WEST
Harvey Mudd College's Society of Women Engineers
To encourage Southern California high school women to enter the
math-based fields of science and technology, the Harvey Mudd College
section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) hosts its annual
one-day Women Engineers and Scientists of Tomorrow (WEST) Conference each spring on the Harvey Mudd campus. The conference offers interaction with women who have successful
careers in engineering and science and with women science and
engineering students.
Activities at the conference include interactive workshops in engineering and other disciplines of science and mathematics as well as presentations about applying to
technical colleges and about college life.
Last year, the Harvey Mudd College SWE,
led by its co-presidents, juniors Sarah Al-Beaini and Li Tian, invited high school students within a 100-mile radius to the conference. About 200 participants attended, including students, parents and teachers.
This year's keynote speaker will be Jill Tietjen, an environmental engineer, community leader, and business professional. Tietjen's talk, entitled "Breaking the Mold: Women in Engineering and Science," provides information on historical and modern women in engineering and science.
Mark your calendars: This year's WEST conference will be held on Saturday March 4, 2006!
