WINNERS AND LOSERS IN TUESDAYS ELECTION IN DALLAS COUNTY
6-5-08

We would be interested in your thoughts about who the biggest winners and losers were in Tuesday's election here in Dallas County. Our opinion is that Mayor Perkins, the Alabama Democratic Conference led by his lady friend Sharri James, and New South were the BIG LOSERS and that thinking, independent minded African-American voters were the BIG WINNERS. Here are our lists of losers and winners:

BIGGEST LOSER: Mayor James Perkins and the Alabama Democratic Conference who backed 5 losers in 6 races. The only winner they backed was Connell Towns, who would have won without their endorsement.

Perkins and his hand picked county Democrat Committee were big losers because they permitted Mr. Clifford Hunter to run as a Democrat, even though he clearly had violated the Democrat Party Rules by running as a Freedom Party Candidate 4 years ago. When you do not do what is right, justice is meted out sooner or later. Hunter was soundly trounced by Larry Nichols, who received at least 50% of the African-American vote in this county commission race.

We also think Tenika Wagner and Tonya Thomas were losers. We do not know these ladies, and in fact, have been told that they both are nice people. What we don't understand is why they ran against Tammy King and Frances Hughes in the first place. There is much thought abroad that King and Hughes were opposed for the sole reason that they were white. We never heard either Ms. Wagner or Ms. Thomas convincingly articulate why they were running. With 20 years experience for Ms. King and 37 years of experience for Ms. Hughes and spotless records and audits and with staffs which include African-Americans and who are courteous and professional to everyone who comes to the Collectors or Assessors Office, there simply was no legitimate reason for these ladies to be replaced. Each of them received a good percentage of votes from African-Americans.

Another loser was the Rev. Gary Crum, who had 2 and perhaps 3 of his chuch members defeated in the election Tuesday. Now Mr. Crum has decided that he will run as in independent against Commissioner Roy Moore in November. Commissioner Moore easily defeated the Rev. Mr. Ezekiel Pettway, another Perkins devotee, on Tuesday. We honestly are asking Mr. Crum what he wants in the community. Is it influence, power, prestige? First, he supports Republican Governor Bob Riley, then he takes part in an African-American fund raiser for Republican Senator Jeff Sessions, then he supports the Democrat Obama for President, and now he runs as an independent. If Mr. Crum will take the time to write us and tell us what he hopes to accomplish, we will publish his response without any editing.

Another loser was the Rev. Daryl Moore, a strong Perkins supporter and the City of Selma Building Inspector, who was defeated by Curtis Williams, who is on suspension from his job at Southside High School. One would have thought Moore would have done better than 32% of the vote, but his strong ties to Mayor Perkins obviously contributed to his overwhelming defeat.

SO THOSE WERE THE LOSERS, BUT WHO WERE THE WINNERS? We believe the biggest winners were the independent thinking African-American voters in Dallas County who no longer take the yellow and blue ballots from the ADC and New South and vote the ballots, but who now think for themselves and vote for the people they know and think will serve them honestly and fairly.

A good example of that honest and fair service is found in Larry Nichols, Tammy King and Frances Hughes, big winners on Tuesday. African-Americans comprise 66% of the voters in Dallas County. There are approximately 20,000 registered African-American voters and approximately 10,500 white voters in Dallas County. We hear that Nichols, King and Hughes all made sincere efforts to get the votes of every person-white or black-in the county.

We also think that the Selma Times-Journal which endorsed 6 winners in 6 races was a winner on Tuesday. It will be interesting to see what they do in the city elections this summer.

That's our opinion on losers and winners Tuesday. Let us hear from you about yours!!!
