DOES THE MAYOR PLAN TO PUT A SCHOOL NEXT TO A TOXIC WASTE DUMP?!
12-29-06

Did Larry Striplin choose to call in a political favor from Mayor Perkins, over-price the land behind the old Wal-Mart, and try to sell it to the City of Selma?

When this "good deal" purchase started, the Mayor called a friend in Texas to do an EPA Inspection and the results were that the area was not in violation of EPA guidelines. However, there was a major flaw in this planned deal. Citizens with memories contacted this website and said that in the late 70's and early 80's the land, next to the proposed school site, was used as a dumpsite for lead-based paint, metals, paint cans, and other EPS related violations.

Since the City (the citizens) are still involved in this proposed deal, this website has decided to show you pictures of the toxic waste site, next to the site, the Mayor and the Crenshaw Block propose to buy for $1,000,000.00.

Image 1 Just a pile of trash laying on the ground.
Image 2 This is a coiled piece of steel. In the picture it looks small, but it is actually about 8 inches long!
Image 3 The bolt in this picture is bigger than a roll of quarters, just to let you get an idea of the sizes.
Image 4 These piles are of the steel in pictures 2 and 3...but wait, there are MANY more piles!
Image 5 Hmm, a forklift tire, wonder why that would be dumped out in the woods.
Image 6 Another forklift tire, but what's that under the steel pile...oh my, it's a paint bucket!
Image 7 It may look like a large steel pile, but it's only 1/2 of it.
Image 8 This is the same pile from picture 7, only this time, you can see almost all of it!
Image 9 I wonder what killed the grass and caused this wash, oh yeah, IT WAS THE PAINT!
Image 10 What's that off in the distance, more steel piles!
Image 11 A red clump of paint between 2 LARGE clumps of white paint..so dangerous for our children.

Note: These pictures are only of the very opening of this dumpsite. The actual area covered in toxins appears to be extremely large.

These pictures explain themselves but the Mayor's actions need more explaining.

1. Why didn't the Council walk or look at this land next to the proposed school site?

2. If they did, why did they cover up their findings?

3. Was there an actual EPA approved inspection or did the City just pay a friend $3,500.00 for a report of compliance and did the inspection include this site?

4. Did the mayor know that this land was likely contaminated by toxic waste?

5. Was the Mayor willing to build a school next to land possibly contaminated by lead-based paint and other toxins?

6. Did he care?

7. Did you know where erosion starts, which it has, lead in paint spreads and contaminates acres of land and remains toxic for an indefinite length of time?

8. Did you know that lead is poisonous to humans?

9. Did you know that lead contaminates water and whereever the water flows?

10. The citizens of Selma should re-coup the money spent on the inspection report from the Mayor and Charlotte Griffith's friend in Texas, don't you think?

11. Was this "deal" concerning a school thrown together for money and favor without regard for our children and their health?

12. Were certain Council people to profit from this deal or were they just plain "negligent" in their obligations to our City?

13. Were they taken in by the Mayor's "silver political tongue" rather than using some kind of intelligence?

More very serious questions need to be asked of Mr. Striplin, the Mayor, and the Crenshaw Block. They are the very people who have pushed for this "deal". Ignorance is no excuse!!

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management will be involved in this (not the Mayor's friend who approved a dumpsite at the old Brownfield site - a flood area).

The State Environmental Protection Agency will be notified of this situation. If this website finds that the Mayor's friend at the EPA is called in to downplay the seriousness of this dumpsite, further action will be taken.

This serious condition must be addressed for the safety and welfare of the children in this city.

Statewide attention should be brought to bear on this "deal" and other deals this Mayor and his "favorites" have made with citizen monies!
