GEMS OF IGNORANCE FROM SELMA CITY COUNCIL MINUTES
12-11-07

Fifty years from now, historians, after they finish laughing, will read the Minutes of the Selma City Council meetings and suppose that Selma was governed by illiterates in the year 2007. For your holiday merriment, we share the two following gems from recent City Council Meetings:

Councilman Johnnie Leashore is supposedly talking about the members of the Selma City School Board serving "STAGGERED" terms. BUT HERE is what Leashore actually said:

"...which requires for an eleven member school board appointed by the this City Council to serve a STAGNATED term..."

While Leashore is driving over 100 miles per hour on city streets without a drivers license on him, perhaps he can think about the difference between STAGGERED AND STAGNATED.

Leashore's remarks rank right up there on the illiteracy scale with Councilwoman Janie Venter who, commenting recently about the loud noise in Ward 8, said the noise was so loud that it could set off people's PACESETTERS (did she mean PACEMAKERS?).

Councilwoman Venter also had this gem of illiteracy during the council's discussion of the people voting on the Bond Issue:

"Councilwoman Venter further stated that Selma has been in the black for so long, and in the dungeon and so forth, and it is time for it to move to the top, because the bottom will go to the top and the top will come to the bottom, and it is time for Selma to come to the top."

Anyone who can explain what the heck this means is invited to email us with the explanation!

It is regrettable that our once lovely city has to now be governed by people such as Leashore, Venter, Crenshaw, and Sam Randolph, who apparently has to look at Ms. Crenshaw to determine if he can go to the bathroom. We don't think we have ever seen a man in public office who can't make a decision without someone else telling him what to do - what a shame!
