MORE INCOMPETENCE AT THE PERKINS CITY HALL
6-23-08

If the following happened in a private company, the CEO and CFO would surely be FIRED and other company officials would be demoted and disciplined. However, in the Perkins' City Hall, this will be covered up as just another financial screw up that characterizes his administration and the incompetents he has hired to work in City Hall.

It is reported to us that ever since the St. James Hotel re-opened, the Hotel has been sending the lodging tax money TO MONTGOMERY rather than to the CITY OF SELMA. The City has lost thousands of dollars in Lodging Taxes. After many, many months, the City has just discovered that it has been receiving NO lodging taxes from the St. James FOR MONTHS. Now the city will have to recover the money from the State. What a mess!

We wonder whose responsibility it is to prevent mistakes like this from happening. We will start with Mayor Perkins, who wants to control everything; therefore, he must also take responsibility for the incompetence of his underlings. We also think Charlotte Griffith, our $60,000 a year Community Development Director, had something to do with this because she was so instrumental in getting the management group to run the St. James, which also sent the money to Montgomery. Finally, the $52,000 a year City Finance Director, Cynthia Mitchell, had some responsibility to see that the City gets the money due.

We wonder how many more businesses in Selma are sending lodging and other taxes to the wrong place. This whole thing shows how poorly managed the city's finances are under the Perkins administration.
