WE ARE MAD AS HELL AND WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE

Our readers will remember that three years ago when Councilman Williamson called for martial law in Selma we said his call was premature and we did not support it. Two months ago when he called for martial law, we gave a qualified vote of support because of the increase in crime in the city. After THREE INCIDENTS this past week, we say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! Martial law should be established in Selma AND IT SHOULD BE DONE NOW!!
The reason for our support of martial law is (1) the increase in common thugs in the city and (2) the inability and ineptness of the Selma Police Department to prevent such crimes and the insensitivity, and rudenenss of some members of the Selma Police Department toward VICTIMS of these criminal acts.
In the past week, a clerk at Moates Store on the west side of town was beaten and robbed. Whoever this criminal thug is, he had better be thankful that the store owner was not present at the time. We know the store owner and we suspect that there would be one less criminal alive in Selma had the owner been at the store. Of course, as soon as one of these thugs is shot by someone trying to protect their life and property, we will have a racial explosion here in Selma where the criminal becomes the victim and hero.
However, it is the second and third incidents of the past week which have solidified our opinion that Chief Riley does not have the backbone to lead the Police Department and that Detective Hardy should have never been hired as a police officer and should be FIRED IMMEDIATELY. A local man was on his way to work early in the morning last week when his truck was hit by two drunk criminals. One of the drunks told him that he was going to pull over so they could exchange tag numbers. Instead the thugs sped away. The citizen followed them to a residence in east Selma. There is a witness to what happened next who has IDENTIFIED, TO THE POLICE, THE DRUNK OR DRUGGED CRIMINALS, BUT Det. Hardy is telling the victim that unless he can identify the men the police can not do anything.
After the man pursued the drunks, the two thugs attacked and beat him. Fortunately he was able to leave the scene and drive himself to the Emergency Room. There he had to have a number of stitches in his head. His eye is damaged and may be damaged permanently.
ENTER NOW THE SELMA POLICE DEPARTMENT. First, the officer who went to the ER to talk with the victim and his family seemed completely disenterested in what happened. No pictures or fingerprints were made off the truck. Next, Chief Riley was talked to by a member of the victim's family. Riley's comment was that she was just being negative. And lastly, Det. Hardy, WHO SHOULD BE FIRED TODAY, was exceptionally rude to the victim's wife, even at one point telling her to "SHUT UP"! Worse, Hardy told the family that he couldn't work on the case after Wednesday because he would be tied up with the FOOTWASH. WHY IN THE HELL IS A SELMA POLICE OFFICER NEGLECTING THE VICTIMS IN THIS CITY TO GO TO A FOOTWASH IN SOME OTHER COUNTY?? So far, the SPD has done nothing except act disinterested, be rude to the victim's family, and make excuses. AND we are told that the victim's family has called Mayor George Evans, WHO HAS YET TO RETURN THE CALL! Mayor, tell Riley and Hardy to talk to the lady who witnessed this beating and who told the police who the thugs were. Have them arrested immediately!!
We hope this family will pursue this matter. We are told that they have contacted our council person, Dr. Newton, as well as Councilmembers Keith and Williamson about this matter.
The third incident this week involved a senior citizen who was the victim of a home invasion in the Old Town District. The theif took jewelry. DOES THAT SOUND FAMILIAR? Each time, these fly by night purchasers of gold and silver come to Selma and set up shop at a local motel, JEWELRY ROBBERIES IN THE CITY INCREASE FIVE FOLD. Chief Riley is supposed to get a list from these fly by night purchasers every morning by 10 am of who brought in gold/silver, where the sellers live, and other information. THIS WAS NOT BEING DONE AS RECENTLY AS A MONTH AGO. We doubt that it is being sone now. The local newspaper should go to the Police Department and request the list every day from these fly by night dealers who come to Selma and indirectly aid in the increase in crime and thuggery in this city.
We are TIRED OF THESE THINGS HAPPENING in our city and say that as difficult as it will be for 6 months to a year that MARTIAL LAW SHOULD BE DECLARED IMMEDIATELY. We also are tired of Chief Riley making excuses for everything that confronts him, and we are tired of people like Detective Hardy working as a police officer. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Stop this crime now. Get the military to protect and patrol the 95% of the black and white citizens who want to live in peace, unity and safety!
