AN OPEN LETTER TO POLICE CHIEF JIMMY MARTIN WITH A COPY TO MAYOR PERKINS
Dear Chief Martin:
How many more police cars are you going to let officer Michael Hardy wreck, total and/or tear up? This site has reports showing that Officer Hardy has:
*TOTALED TWO (2) POLICE VEHICLES
*DESTROYED TRANSMISSIONS IN THREE (3) POLICE VEHICLES
*DAMAGED ONE (1) POLICE VEHICLE
As you are aware, Officer Hardy has TOTALED ONE VEHICLE THIS WEEK AND TORN UP THE TRANSMISSION IN ANOTHER VEHICLE THIS WEEK. Have you taken steps to have him removed from the Police Department or to give him a desk job? He appears to be both a danger to himself and to the public. To my knowledge, you have done nothing in the way of discipline since he is one of your favorite and part of the 7 suspects you have hired from the Marion Police Department.
The reports I have indicate that within the last year, THE MARION CONTINGENT YOU HAVE BROUGHT TO SELMA HAS:
*TOTALED FOUR (4) POLICE CARS
*DAMAGED TWO (2) CARS AND TORN UP MORE THAN A COUPLE OF TRANSMISSIONS
Did they teach these people to drive police vehicles in the Demolition Derby in MARION?
This site has learned from sources inside the Police Department that this week, in the entire Selma Police Department, there were only 6 to 7 Police Vehicles which could be put into service-because police officers had wrecked or torn up so many vehicles. This site heard that there were so few cars which could be placed into service that officers were riding 2 to a car. THIS SITE EVEN HEARD THAT YOU HAD TO PUT THE POLICE "BOOM BOOM" CAR INTO PATROL SERVICE, which has King Stereo written on the side of the car.
You lack of leadership in the Police Department in this and other areas is endangering the lives and property of the people of Selma. Are you aware that within the past week:
*one young man was mugged and robbed at the Winn-Dixie Store on West Dallas Ave
*one young man was robbed on Kings Bend Road
*one man at the Ramada Inn practically had his room door broken down by thugs trying to rob him
If you or the Mayor or a new Police Chief do not get the Police Department straightened out with sufficient manpower and vehicles, there is going to be a killing of some of these would be robbers/thugs. Then you are going to have a gigantic incident on your hands.
The Mayor has said we could put 200 policemen on every corner in Selma and not be able to stop crime. WHAT A SAD COMMENTARY ON THE MORAL ATMOSPHERE OF THE CITY WHERE HE HAS BEEN MAYOR FOR ALMOST 6 YEARS! It is certain that the Mayor would not want 200 policemen in Selma. He would rather put 200 SOCIAL WORKERS WHO ARE ON THE CITY PAYROLL AND WHO COULD DOUBLE AS HIS CAMPAIGN WORKERS ON EVERY CORNER IN SELMA. Does anyone believe that would stop crime in Selma?
Chief Martin, this site is willing to print your response to this open letter, especially why you continue to let Michael Hardy destroy and wreck police cars and do nothing.
