DID MAYOR PERKINS AND CHIEF MARTIN TIP OFF DRUG DEALERS
Within minutes of learning of the federal and state drug operation against drug dealers on St. Phillips Street, Mayor Perkins called his friend, Mike Reynolds, at radio station WHBB-WDXX and told Mike to put the news of the raid on the air. By 6:15 am Wednesday morning, WHILE THE RAID WAS STILL IN PROGRESS, WHBB was broadcasting news of the federal and state action. This could have tipped off drug dealers that they should flee or get rid of evidence. By broadcasting this news while the mission was still in progress, we believe WHBB did a grave disservice to the 150 law enforcement personnel who had come to Selma to do what the Mayor and Police Department should have done years ago.
We do not insinuate that the Mayor and Chief intentionally tipped off the drug dealers on St. Phillips Street. Their purpose was to get publicity for the Selma Police Department, which had been kept out of the loop as far as news of the impending raid on St. Phillips Street Wednesday morning. Because of previous leaks of information about operations in Selma by state agencies, the Mayor and Police Department were kept virtually in the dark about the time and extent of this mission. On previous occasions, when the State ABC Board was going to visit certain local nightclubs and told the Selma Police Department of the plans, the ABC agents went to the clubs, the clubs had been tipped off and were actually closed. State and federal agencies are very reluctant to share any secret information with Chief Martin and the Selma Police Department.
The pertinent question this website wants answered is HOW DID THESE DRUG DEALERS OPERATE FOR 6 YEARS WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE MAYOR AND THE POLICE CHIEF. We want to know why nothing was done about this deplorable situation in our city FOR 6 YEARS? Was SOMEONE OR SOME PEOPLE BEING PAID OFF? The people of Selma have a right to know, especially the poor people on St. Phillips Street, who have been held hostage by these criminals and thugs, and want to know why THE SELMA POLICE DEPARTMENT AND THE SELMA CITY GOVERNMENT DID NOTHING TO STOP THIS SITUATION! Why did it take the FEDERAL AND STATE GOVERNMENT to come into this city and do what the city should have done?
If this responsibilty is too large for our city leadership it only makes sense to change the leadership. WE WANT SOME ANSWERS FROM CITY HALL AND WE WANT THEM NOW!!
