MUSINGS ON JUNE 3 DALLAS COUNTY ELECTIONS

The future of our county hangs in the balance. Will we continue the PROVEN LEADERSHIP of Sheriff Harris Huffman, Tax Collector Tammy King and Tax Assessor Ouida Sheehan OR will be turn county government over to the most unqualified, misinformed, and uninformed people ever to seek public office in this county?
If you want to vote for local officials, your must vote in the DEMOCRAT primary on Tuesday, June 3. If you wish to vote in the county races, ask for the Democrat ballot when you go to the polls.
TAX COLLECTOR
We have observed the local political scene for more than twenty years. In that time, we do not think we have ever seen a candidate as uninformed, misinformed, ill informed and unqualified for an office than CICELY CURTIS,
who is running for Tax Collector against incumbent TAMMY JONES KING. We make these statements about Ms. Curtis because of some of the most ridiculous and uneducated statements regarding the office of Tax Collector that we have ever heard. Consider what Ms Curtis recently said on ROSE SANDERS’ hate radio program.
(1) Ms. Curtis said she would give more money for the education of “our babies”, as if the Tax Collector determines how much money the schools receive. THIS IS PLAIN IGNORANCE by Ms. Curtis. The amount of tax revenue given to the schools is determined by the laws of the State of Alabama enacted by the State legislature. The function of tax collector is to distribute the funds to those agencies as the law requires.
(2) Ms. Curtis spoke of exemptions from certain taxes that people could receive, as if the tax collector can give people exemptions. Again, more ignorance from Ms. Curtis. IT IS NOT THE TAX COLLECTOR‘S OFFICE, BUT THE TAX ASSESSOR’S OFFICE WHERE EXEMPTIONS ARE GIVEN.
(3) Ms. Curtis said she would set up an automated payment system so people could pay their taxes online. More
misinformation from her. Although the City of Selma does not have a system where taxes can be paid on line, TAMMY JONES KING INSTITUTED AN ONLINE PAYMENT SYSTEM back in 2007.
(4) Ms. Curtis says she will “require professional, accessible and attentive staff”. WHAT AN INSULT to the three experienced employees in the Tax Collectors office! This is especially an insult to Mrs. BERNADINE REMBERT, WHO HAS MORE THAN 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE in giving professional service to the people of Dallas County. Mrs. Rembert and the other employees in the office have more than 30 years of living by the motto established many years ago by TAMMY KING, “My staff and I will never forget that we work for the people of Dallas County”.
(5) Ms. Curtis says she will “report tax payments and deposits accurately” and “ensure public trust”. Is she unaware or so ignorant of what a Tax Collector does that she doesn’t realize that the Tax Collector’s office is regularly audited by the State of Alabama and that TAMMY KING has regularly received perfect and superior audits for doing the very things Ms. Curtis implies is not being done and That she will do.
For more than 24 years, TAMMY JONES KING has served quietly, efficiently, professionally and honestly in collecting and distributing over $150,000,000.00 (One hundred Fifty Million Dollars) of our tax money. WE STRONGLY URGE A VOTE FOR HER ON TUESDAY, JUNE 3 because of her faithful service to the people of Dallas County and because Ms. Curtis is so uninformed as to be unqualified to hold this office.
TAX ASSESSOR
Once again the hate radio personality and son-in-law of ROSE AND HANK SANDERS, Franklin Fortier, is seeking a county wide office. We can not believe that the people of Dallas County are ready to turn any county office over to the people who had caused this city and county to regress economically, socially, and racially while the rest of Alabama progresses. Unlike Ms. Curtis, who has the same backers as Fortier, Fortier has not yet made any public statements indicating he knows or doesn’t know anything about the office and duties of Tax Assessor.
OUIDA SHEEHAN has done an excellent job as our Tax Assessor since taking over for long time Assessor, Frances Hughes. Ouida has more than 20 years experience working in the Assessor’s office and was the logical person to replace Frances as Assessor. We think she deserves a full term NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF HER EFFECTIVE SERVICE, BUT ALSO BEAUSE OF THE TRACK RECORD OF DIVISION, HATE, DISUNITY AND DESPAIR promoted by her opponent.
SHERIFF
For people who objectively think for themselves, HARRIS HUFFMAN is the only choice for Sheriff of Dallas County. For many years, he has run an efficient law enforcement agency, jail and office with sometimes limited resources. Crime is well within the state average in Dallas County. We thank Harris and all his deputies and staff for the great work they do. We strongly urge his re-election.
The county is at a crossroads. We can elect people with proven leadership and long years of effective service to the people of Dallas County on Tuesday, June 3, or we can take the road traveled by other counties in the Black Belt and end up like them. Please go to the polls on Tuesday, June 3, vote in the DEMOCRAT PRIMARY, and continue TO ELECT proven leaders for Dallas County.
