I Dreamed a Dream

I Dreamed a Dream (English)

Fantine

There was a time when men were kind
 When their voices were soft
 And their words inviting
There was a time when love was blind
And the world was a song
 And the song was exciting
 There was a time
 Then it all went wrong

I dreamed a dream in times gone by
When hope was high
And life worth living
I dreamed that love would never die
I dreamed that God would be forgiving
Then I was young and unafraid
And dreams were made and used and wasted
There was no ransom to be paid
No song unsung
No wine untasted
But the tigers come at night
With their voices soft as thunder
As they tear your hope apart
And they turn your dream to shame
He slept a summer by my side
He filled my days with endless wonder
He took my childhood in his stride
But he was gone when autumn came
And still I dream he'll come to me
That we'll live the years together
But there are dreams that cannot be
And there are storms we cannot weather
I had a dream my life would be
So much different from this hell I'm living
So different now from what it seemed
Now life has killed
The dream I dreamed.

Mon histoire (français)

*Not a direct translation!*

Fantine:
Doux Seigneur, que vous ai-je fait,
Pour que plus je tombe,
Et plus vous me laissiez tomber?

Mais les loups rôdent dans la nuit;

Andrew's Critique

This song is remarkably beautiful.  It's sad, far from optimistic and touches many themes beside the damaging effects of a love triangle.  If you have read the criticism you will know that this song is Eponine's revelation; the point in the play where she realizes that she lost Marius and that she must accept it.  I adore both versions, but in my (profession) opinion, I feel that the French version says a lot more than the English.  If you were to translate the French version, you would find many profound statements (i.e. "All my life, I've waited for a shadow" "My story is an empty shell, a dream full of softness (love) of which I never got my share").  The English version is excellent though, it's more straight-forward and does not use any metaphors.  Either way, great song, 17.5 million stars, 5 thumbs up...you get the idea.  Just listen to it...you'll love it. (Try to get the Lea version, she sings it perfectly)
