This is Audrey Elizabeth (McClary) Mitchell (1921-2010). She was born at Kingstree, SC, the second child of Ruth (Brown) McClary (b. 1896) and Henry Ervin McClary (1896-1950). Ruth, the oldest child of Joseph Nathaniel Brown, died young. As a result, Audrey’s Aunt Nell Brown Bannerman stepped in and helped raise her. Audrey grew up in Greeleyville, Charleston, Blythewood Toogoodoo and Columbia, SC. She graduated from Columbia High School in 1939 and took courses at Columbia College, SC and Northwestern University in Illinois. She worked as a secretary at Shaw Air Force until 1954 when she married John Andrew Mitchell. She was a Methodist with her favorite hymn being “Forth in Thy Name, Oh Lord.” She had breast cancer twice, surviving it at age 72. She had a sense of humor and was not easily rattled. She liked reading, movies, gardening and cats. She and husband John are buried at Beaufort National Cemetery in Greeleyville.
