Dear Alice:
I understand the Central Florida Barry sites are going to linked terms in August. Can you tell me the financial aid advantages to this term format?
Hoping for Help
Dear Hoping:
With regard to financial aid eligibility, there are definite advantages to the linked term format over the previous 10-week format. Students registering for 6 credits in Fall A and 6 credits in Fall B will be considered full time for financial aid purposes. The Pell Grant award is based on the enrollment status; therefore, the amount of this grant will be substantially higher for students who qualify. Also, there are two Florida grants that are based on full time enrollment: the Florida Resident Access Grant (FRAG) and Florida Student Assistance Grant. Please contact me at 1-877-472-2779 or e-mail me at acmiller@mail.barry.edu to determine your eligibility for these grants.
An additional advantage to the linked term format is student loan eligibility. Under the previous 10-week format, students enrolled in one course only (3 credits) did not qualify for a student loan because they were considered less than half time. Under the new linked term format, students who register for 3 credits in Fall A and 3 credits in Fall B are considered half time and as such, they may apply for a student loan. However, please keep in mind that the Summer mini-mester does not qualify for any type of financial aid. Students are encouraged to apply for enough aid during the Spring term to cover tuition for Summer classes. Again, if you are interested in this type of financial aid assistance, please contact me at the phone number or e-mail address above.

The second week to the sixth a student can withdraw from a course.
A student can withdraw from a course up until the sixth week of term (May 12) and receive a “W” grade on your transcript. There will be NO refund of tuition or fees. If you are having problems or extenuating circumstances, and feel you will need to withdraw, please call the office as soon as possible – we may be able to help!
KEEP IN MIND FACULTY CANNOT WITHDRAW YOU FROM A COURSE! YOU MUST COMPLETE FORMS WITH THE FRONT OFFICE.
In late 2002 Alene Kaufman, Northrop-Grumman, was promoted to IIS Vice President and CIO, Newport News Sector. Ms. Kaufman received her Bachelor’s degree in Professional Studies here at Barry University. We wish her well in her new position.
The next deadline for portfolio submission is April 11, 2003. It is imperative that you meet with your Advisor well in advance of that date. Portfolios usually require at least 4-5 visits for revisions. Students who wait until the last week may or may not be able to gather all the required documentation to receive the maximum number of credits.
Happy Valentine’s Day

Also, no student may receive a diploma or transcript of credits until the account is paid in full. (2002/2003 catalog, pg 11)

By now, all student should be able to access their Bucmail account. If you have not done so, please go to: http://webmail.barry.edu and login. If you have any problems please contact the Melbourne or Merritt Island offices.
Happy Easter
Are you having trouble getting books???? Barry University STRONGLY recommends utilizing the MBS book store. At the beginning of every registration the Merritt Island and Melbourne offices contact MBS to reserve copies of the books we will be using for term. If you call their 1.800.325.3252 number, the MBS book store will mail you a book in about 2-3 days. The MBS books are very comparable to other books and do not overcharge for shipping. Students can still use BCC, online sources, Books a million etc, however, our advice is, if they do have the book on-hand, do not have the book ordered.
