The Portfolio

The portfolio provides the mechanism for translating college-level
learning acquired through documented professional work experience and
community activities into Barry University credit. The portfolio is
an option for students pursuing a Bachelor of Liberal Studies, a Bachelor
of Professional Studies, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology,
or a Bachelor of Professional Administration degree. It is a
requirement for all other Bachelor of Science degrees.
PORTFOLIO OPTION/REQUIREMENT(Up to 30 credits)
Students who choose or are required to submit a portfolio for degree
completion must demonstrate college-level learning in one or more of the
following competencies: administration, communication, creativity,
critical thinking, interpersonal relations, investigation and research,
supervision, and leadership.
PORTFOLIO FORMAT
The portfolio consists of an Introductory Section and four major parts:
Introductory Section
- Contains Portfolio Completion Checklist
- Has a Term Printout or Unofficial Transcript
- Includes a Goal Statement
Part I, The Experiential Learning Resume
- Must follow the format illustrated in the Instructional Modules for the Preparation of Experiential Learning Portfolios
- Presents position and activities in chronological order from present to past
- Lists professional organizations and community activities if applicable
- Includes non-credit training, awards and honors, and professional licenses if applicable
Part II, The Learning Assessment Worksheet
- Follows the format of the Resume
- Separates tasks and responsibilities (learning experience components) from learning (competencies)
Part III, The Autobiographical Learning Essay
- Is a reflective, narrative commentary on the Resume and Learning Assessment Worksheet
- Describes what the student learned and how learning took place and was applied in positions and activities
- Concludes with the student's equation of experiential learning to academic disciplines
Part IV, The Documentation
- Includes original letters on organization letterhead stationery confirming professional work experiences with accurate dates and a
description of responsibilities and competencies
- Contains copies of letters for professional organizations, community activities
