Destination Unknown

On the weekend of November 21-23, 2003, a group of 12 young adults traveled up north into the Laurentians for a very special retreat:  Destination Unknown.

It was a chance for them to get away from the busy-ness of their daily lives and to take the time to reflect on the issues that most concern them as they try to live their faith on a daily basis. It was a chance to explore the relationship between their faith and their identities, their goals, their gifts, their relationships, their education / work / career, their spirituality, and so on. In short, this was a chance for them to explore what they believe and how that makes a difference in their lives.

Because the point of the weekend was to discuss what they wanted to discuss, to focus where you they wanted to focus, every participant (with their team) was responsible for animating one portion of the retreat.  The topics included:

In addition, retreatants were also responsible for meals -- planning, shopping, cooking and clean-up.  Over-all, it was quite a challenge -- and a great success!

Anne-Marie works on her mission statement collage as part of the opening activity.

Melissa listens carefully during one of the discussions.  Note the mission statements decorating the window.

Dinner's a family affair!

Anne-Marie, Dorothy, Liz & Jason reflect upon what they are called to do in their lives as part of Saturday night's workshop.

The group gathers for evening prayer by candlelight, reflecting on the gifts of darkness and light in their lives.

The whole group gathers for one last picture. (Thanks to Lisa behind the camera!)

As part of the opening activity, the young adults were asked to reflect upon the idea of calling and mission.  They were asked to reflect upon those values and ideals by which they feel called to live their lives.  Given magazines and random quotations, the young adults were invited to produce their own "mission posters" to represent this calling, these ideals.  You can find some of their work here.

And check here to read what a participant thought about the weekend.
