There are a number of considerations you must take into thought before going out sticking holes into your body. It’s pretty easy to pierce your ears yourself, but it is important that you get it done professionally. Here are some things to remember
· The right technique and sterile equipment must be used
· The jewellery must be of the right size and shape and placed in the hole properly. (i.e. don’t put an earring in your naval piercing)
· The jewellery is made of right materials. Eg. Some people are allergic to some types of silver
· Always wear loose and clean clothing around your new piercing. Tight and unwashed clothes can irritate the piercing or possible cause an infection, or rejection.
· Don’t engage in rough activities (eg football or wrestling) while your new piercing is still healing. And don’t tug on them either!
· Try not to sleep on your new piercing. Not only is it uncomfortable but can cause irritation
· Don’t leave your jewellery out for too long! It takes a few weeks for your ears to close up but your tongue can heal in a matter of hours!
· Allowing time for the piercing to heal. Which means don’t take out the jewellery until your piercing has properly healed
· A new piercing is a wound, and should be treated with care. Tenderness, swelling, redness, etc are expected
· After the piercing has healed and you go to change the jewellery, you’ll more than likely find this crusty stuff on it. This is just the dried up fluid your body secretes to help with the natural healing process. It’s nothing but dead cells and blood plasma.
· Avoid chlorine pools during the first month. After that, you should really keep your time swimming in chlorine pools limited, as chlorine is a harsh chemical and they use TONNES in public pools. The ocean is probably the safest as the saltwater aids in the healing process. Make sure you clean your piercing with anti-bacterial soap after swimming in chlorine water or seawater.
· Don’t drink alcohol before you get yourself pierced. If you do you’ll probably feel really sick afterwards, and it increases bleeding.
