The nostril piercing is very popular among girls as well as guys (which I think is damn sexy).
Nostril piercing supposedly originates from the Middle-East almost 4000 years ago. It spread to India in the 16th century, where royalty adopted the look. The kind of jewellery worn in the nose piercing could determine your social status, or even your title.
Hindu women usually have their nostril pierced to signify their engagement or marital status.
A tiny stud or a ring is usually worn in the nostril. These studs, which are made especially for noses, will either be bent, and shaped like an L, or have a tiny plug on the end. I recommend the bent L shaped studs, as they are less painful to put in and out. When trying to put in or pull out a nose stud with the tiny plug on the end, it can be very painful, as the skin heals to the width of the bar. The plug at the end will only rip the hole open and disturb the healing process. It may bleed and/or get infected.
It should take up to 4 months to heal, and in this time you shouldn’t remove your nose stud or ring, as the hole needs to heal to the shape of the jewellery.
An earlobe piercing guns and ear studs are totally unsuitable to pierce your nostril. A needle is used instead, which is held there for roughly 10 seconds, taken out, then the nose stud or ring placed in properly. It is important to place the stud or ring correctly for overall comfort and to let it heal properly. (E.g. When I first got my nose pierced, I used a nose stud with a plug on the end. The nose stud wasn’t long enough to fit through the hole properly, so part of it closed up. I found this out a few weeks later, when I tried to put a bent nose stud in, and ended up having to re-pierce it, which was quite painful as it was infected at the time as well.)
I myself got my nose pierced by a friend (thanx Aleisha!!!), who, lucky for me, worked in a piercing saloon. First we numbed my nose with ice. She then used a very thick sterilised sewing needle to pierce my right nostril. It was very difficult to push the needle through all the way, which involved my friend having to put her fingers up my nose and try and screw it through. Nasty stuff.
