The central Americans once pierced their nipples to signify their manhood, and was considered a sign of strength, virility and endurance. The Roman soldiers would also pierce their nipples to show their strength and duty to protect their emperor. In the 1890’s Victorian women everywhere were piercing their nipples and using jewellery sold by the famous jewellers or Paris. It was very popular to get both nipples pierced and hang chains from one nipple to the other.
Nipple piercings are either horizontal or vertical. Rings are usually worn horizontally as they are easier to clean than barbells. No more than a ¼ of the ring should be through the piercing. A ring which is too small will disrupt the healing process. The ring must be big enough to accommodate the swelling, which is expected during the first few weeks. After the piercing has properly healed a smaller ring can be worn.
Jewellery which is too thing is more easily rejected by the body and is more likely to tear the piercing with strenuous play ;-). For most people 14 r 12 gauge is appropriate. Sensation and stimulation also increase when larger gauges are worn. Healing time takes from 3-6 months.
