Does it hurt?
Yes and no. It takes about 1 second or less, so if your feel any pain it’ll only last for one second or less. Every person is different and some may experience pain on a higher level. Different areas of the body have different sensitivity. There’s really nothing you can compare it to.
Afterwards you may feel a burning sensation. This is normal, it’s just the antibodies in your system circulating around the piercing to protect it from infection.
For the first 2-3 days the area around your piercing may be tender and sore if you touch it, so my advice is you don’t.
Can I get HIV or Hepititis ?
Yup. Sad but true. Your chances are minimised if you get it done by a professional though.
Why can’t you use an ear lobe piercing gun to pierce other areas of your body?
Because it crushes the delicate tissues that are pierced and can’t be properly resterilised. An earlobe piercing gun involves piercing the area of your body with an ear lobe stud. Ear studs shouldn’t be worn anywhere but the ear. It can totally wreck your belly piercing, as shown here.
Why is body piercing more expensive than getting your ears pierced?
You’re paying for the highest standards of hygiene, jewellery and experience. The ear lobe piercing gun requires no experience, training or special skills to use. Body piercing is a highly skilled operation, and the person doing the piercing must be experienced and needs to know what to do if complications should arise.
What sort of jewellery should I use for body piercing?
Anything above the neck must be a minimum of 1mm and below the neck 1.6mm.
Non-toxic metals such as surgical steel, 24ct or 18ct gold, niobium, platinum, palladium,316L stainless steel or titanium will decrease your chance of an infection or allergic reaction. Silver should never be used as it oxidises the wound and can cause an allergic reaction. Surgical steel rings must be polished and cleaned.
Don’t use Gemstone or plastic bead as they can crack easily and are a breading ground for bacteria.
Can getting my navel pierced cause complications if I get pregnant?
The navel usually pops out during pregnancy. You can either take it out for good, or replace it with a larger ring, and replace it when a smaller one once your stomach returns to its normal size. However, if you’ve had your navel piercing for several years and decide to take out the jewellery during pregnancy, chances are it won’t heal, but it will shrink.
Can getting my nipples pierced affect breastfeeding?
No it won’t affect breastfeeding, but during pregnancy your nipples can become very tender and you may have to take out the jewellery. If you leave the jewellery in you can wear small barbels (click here) that allow your baby to breastfeed without complications. The best option is to remove the jewellery prior to breastfeeding and replacement afterwards.
