Piercings at the outer edge of the ear are very popular as well. They are known as cartilage piercings, as not only is the skin pierced but the cartilage as well, which gives the ear its shape.
It takes from 4 months to one year to heal. The recommended time in which you wait to remove the earring is up to 10 weeks. During this period you should clean your piercing twice a day with an antiseptic spray.
Not everyone has an ear shaped that suits a cartilage piercing (Eg. When getting my upper ear pierced the hairdresser couldn’t pierce it right up the top, where I wanted it, as my ear folds over too much).
A gun is inappropriate to pierce cartilage, as it may cause lumps in your ears, the result of shattered cartilage. Although most chemists use a gun, it should really be done with a needle, which should be held in the piercing for 10 seconds, then taken out. A stud is then put in. Earring sleepers are not suitable for cartilage piercings, as the edge hinges may be sharp and cause complications with the healing process.
