Hori Digital/Game Boy Player Controller

This is a digital-only controller from Hori, and is meant to be used with the Game Boy Player as a alternative to the GameCube's Standard and Wavebird Wireless controllers. It is pretty much the successor to a controller Hori came out with for the SNES's Super Game Boy.

Unlike the Super Game Boy Commander controller, the Hori Digital controller actually got a release (though limited) outside of Japan and is called the Game Boy Player Controller in North America. Unlike most other accessories on the GameCube, the Game Boy Player Controller's box is nearly identical to the Hori Digital Controller's Japanese box.

As mentioned above, the controller is digital only. There is no Control Stick or C-Stick, and the L and R buttons don't have analog input. The Z Button has been repositioned above the Start button. There is a Select button. The Select button is essentially another Y button, as that is what it is mapped to. Since the Game Boy Player maps the Select button on the Game Boy systems to the GameCube's Y Button, the Select button on the Hori controller actually does make the controller feel a little closer to the controls on a Game Boy system.

Though designed with the Game Boy Player in mind, it works with any GameCube game that supports the Control Pad. In particular, it works well with 2-D games like Sonic Mega Collection, Mega Man Anniversary Collection, and Mega Man X Collection, as well as Japanese releases like Nintendo Puzzle Collection, Adventure Island, and PC Genjin/Bonk's Adventure.

The Hori Digital/Game Boy Player Controller is available in Indigo and Jet black.
