Chapter 1 - Hiragana: The "A" Column. We'll start with the "A" column. There are 5 hiragana characters in each column, with the exception of the "Wa", the "Ya" and the "N" columns (but we'll get to that later).

We'll start with the "A" column. There are 46 different characters, and the order of columns goes from right to left. I will include "hints" to help you remember how to write each hiragana character. (I plan on putting up the stroke order as well.) Here are the first 5 characters:

"A" (pronounced "ah")
Hint to remember:
"A is a turtle with a bow tie, shouting 'Ahhh!'"

い - "I" (pronounced "ee") Hint to remember: "I is two eels."

う - "U" (pronounced "oo") Hint to remember: "U is oodles of horseshoes tossed at a stake."

え - "E" (pronounced "eh") Hint to remember: "E is a praying elf."

お - "O" (pronounced "oh") Hint to remember: "O is over the putting green flag, a golf ball lies."
