Introduction-- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the Lightning Quick guide to beating Pokémon Red and Blue. I first started writing this guide a looooooooong time ago, but I lost it and now have to start over :/ oh well. I'm writing this mainly for Derek's website, but it has been a project I always wanted to finish. Basically, this guide is aimed at beating the game in under 20 hours or so. At the end, there is a section named "Advanced Trainer Techs" that goes against everything recommended in this guide, but that's for true hardcore players. This guide also exploits a bug in the game, so if you're not into cheating, don't read that part. Everything seems to be said and done, I hope you enjoy my guide :) -Chi Tran ---------------------------------------------------------------------- --B. How to play-- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I should assume you already know what the buttons and functions in the game are, but in case you don't, here's a quick run through. A Button: Confirms response, talks to people, selects from a menu B Button: Cancels a selection, cancels evolution, exits menus START Button: Opens the menu SELECT Button: Rearranges items and attacks D-Pad: Moves character, navigates menus and responses Basically, this game involves your character using a set of creatures (Pokémon) to battle other people in the same way (trainers) or savage Pokémon (wild). Each Pokémon can remember one of 4 techniques (attacks, moves) and each move can be used a limited number of times (PP) before it has to be recharged (healed) at a Pokémon Center. The object of the game is to defeat the most powerful trainers in the country/world (the world consists of 1 country). Using objects called Pokéballs, you can capture more Pokémon to use in your team. You are only allowed to carry 6 Pokémon at a time, and you can store the rest of your collection in a computer. Wild Pokémon can be either knocked out or captured. Trainers' Pokémon can only be knocked out. To knock out a Pokémon, reduce its health (HP) to 0. To capture a Pokémon, use a Pokéball. A Pokémon becomes easier to catch if it is affected by a status ailment, its HP is low, or both. Status ailments include the following: Paralyzed: The Pokémon is randomly unable to move. Can be healed by Paralyze Heal, Full Heal, or Full Restore. Sleep: The Pokémon cannot act for 2 to 5 turns unless dictated by the specific attack (such as Rest). Can be healed by waiting out the needed number of turns, using Awakening, PokéFlute, Full Heal, or Full Restore. Poison: The Pokémon takes damage after each turn and after each step taken. Can be healed by using Antidote, Full Heal, or Full Restore. Confusion: The Pokémon has a 50% chance of dealing damage to itself instead of the opponent. Can be healed by waiting it out, ending the battle, or using Full Heal or Full Restore. Burned: The Pokémon takes damage after each turn. Can be healed by using Burn Heal, Full Heal, or Full Restore. Frozen: The Pokémon cannot move. Can ONLY be healed by using Ice Heal, Full Heal, or Full Restore. All status ailments are healed after using a Pokémon Center. Well, those are the basics. If there are any questions or recommended additions, feel free to e-mail me and I will modify this section. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- --C. Walkthrough-- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You start out naming yourself and your rival (whom we will henceforth call Gary). When you can move, first talk to the computer and select Withdraw Items. Take your Potion. Then go downstairs and exit your house. Head north and attempt to leave the town. You will be stopped and taken to the southern building. TIP: Whe talking to people, use the B button to continue the conversation so that when it's done, you won't accidentally talk to the person again. After talking to the Professor, you can choose one of 3 Pokémon. Choose the far right one (Bulbasaur) and name it however you wish. NOTE: All Pokémon names will be referred to by their Nintendo names. You can name them whatever you want, just remember what the Nintendo name is. Now, after you can move, save the game. You're going to enter your first battle. Just keep using Tackle. If you die, restart and try again. The only way you'd lose is if you miss a lot. This should bring your Bulbasaur up to lvl 6. NOTE: Growl is a move that reduces the opponent's attack power. You should never use this, as it wastes a turn and doesn't affect the opponent enough to help. This guide uses only attack moves and some status-inflicting moves, so if you want to keep a stat-changing move, you should learn what moves best compliment it. The best attacks in the game are generally the ones that do the most damage, or the ones that can cause a status ailment or stat change. Leave the building and trek straight up out of town. Talk to the boy on your left for a free Potion. Once you reach the Viridian City, heal and then go to the PokéStore. Here, you'll receive Oak's Parcel. Head back down to Pallet Town and trade it for your Pokédex. Make sure you go through the grass for more experience. At lvl 7, you'll get Leech Seed, which is useful for trainer battles. This move does a bit of damage after each opponent's move and heals your life by that much. After receiving the PokéDex, go back to Viridian City and buy just 1 PokéBall (that's right, 1). Head straight up out of town, but before leaving it, turn straight left into a small path and talk to the tree for a Potion. Go north to Viridian Forest. Now, there's a boy right north of you. Stand next to the big tree exactly 1 space to the upper- left of boy. Talk to the tree for an Antidote. From the tree, go straight up, then go left to the edge of the map to find a PokéBall. Then, I'd recommend fighting wild Pokémon until you reach lvl 10. There are 3 trainers in the forest, all sporting Weedle, Caterpie, or their immediate, immobile evolutions. Fight them all and pick 2 remaining visible items along the way, an Antidote and a Potion. Also, the last trainer before the forest exit is looking at a hidden item, a Potion. I'll finish more later, but this should give you a good start. Just make sure your Bulbasaur is lvl 13 for Vine Whip, and don't let it evolve. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- --D. Items-- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Coming Soon!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- --E.
