 Flying Class
Professor: Llaria -substitute
Assignment Due July 30 .2004

*A young lady stands still, her hands clasped before her as if she had all the patience in the world.  And perhaps she did.  Every student who entered, she greeting with a small smile; her posture was straight and proper, as was her outfit and jet black hair.  It wasn't until she had a comfortably large group before she began.  Her voice was not loud, as a matter of fact it seemed as though she could not make it any louder than the soft whisper she had.  "Silk to the ears and soft as sin," students would later claim.  All of the students leaned in to clearly catch what she had to say.  Her voice seemed to catch on the wind which, thankfully, was blowing into the gathering of student's, lending its aid to hearing her better.*

"Greetings class.  I am Professor Llaria, and I will be your substitute professor today.  Madame Hooch should be back soon, so fret not.  I'm afraid that I'm not particularly fond of flying and would rather stay on the ground.  So I'll give you your lesson from ground zero, trusting you to behave and not crash into each other on purpose or doing the Wrongy Faint."  *She allows herself a very small smile, knowing that she was ill-suited for this job since she was afraid of heights.  However, she would not, she refused to let anyone down.  Her younger brother was a professional Quidditch player, so she could hardly say that she did not know the knoweldge needed.  Her piercing, kind blue eyes studied the hopeful, young group.  Her next comment was almost unemotional as she spoke it, it was nearly lost on the wind.*  My heart would never forgive you....  *She picked up her voice somewhat, to the surprise of the class.  She would not let her soft voice creat handicaps.*  I see that you have done much research and studying so far as teams and the profession of flying go, but how about actually flying?  Aside from learning how to call a broom, I believe you must learn the basics of hovering and moving about before any one of you can commit yourselves to doing some of the more difficult moves on a broom.  Now.  if you will be patient with me, I think we should start our lesson with some of the basics.  There are brooms spread out on the feild, please choose one, preferably not next to someone you might gossip with, and then call your broom and position yourself on it."

*Professor Llaria did not move a step until everyone had a broom, had called it up and had time to position themselves on it.  Only after that did she begin making her way up and down the sloppy rows.  Every few students or so she would mutter her pleasure at such a nice posture.  Even though she did not like flying, she was determined to prove knowledgeable in the area.  Professor Talia Llaria was not one to do less than her absolute best and these students needed her best.  She made her way back to where every student could see and hear her.  She did not miss the sparks of excitement in the students' eyes as they realized that they were really going to fly today.*

"Very nice all of you.  I only had to fix one problem, but I believe that it was mostly the broom's fault." *She allowed herself another small smile as she continued.*  "Now if you will all listen carefully, I will begin explaining."  *The Professor took a broom for herself, a Comet 260, and stood over it properly.  She then pressed against the ground lightly, to make an example of herself as she hovered over the ground. The tips of her boots just barely grazed the grass.*

"Now, to state the obvious, I am hovering.  This is, by far, the highest I will go...and so I expect you to go no higher as well until after this pretest.  You will hover now.  To hover, press the bottom of your feet lightly against the ground, as if you were going to jump, then maintain a balance.  Don't lean forward, if anything, lean slightly back.  You will get a feel for this as time goes on and you gain experience.  That is all there is to it for hovering.  Now for moving.  As simple of a task as the first.  Do not try this until I say so.  Merely lean forward to begin moving.  The more one leans forward, the more one will gather speed.  I am sure that by the number of Quidditch games you all have seen by now that you will understand and grasp this concept easily enough, I dare say.  To stop, lean back.  To dictate which way you will move, you pull the front of your broom to either side. To go up, be careful when doing this, you pull up.  To go down, you press down on your broomstick's handle.  To get off of your broom, act as if you want to go down, then dismantle by jumping off of your broom much the same way with a...Hippogriff.  Take care to hold your broom with one hand to prevent it from flying away though.  *She paused a moment to allow all of this information sink in.*  Questions?  Alright.  You all may practice these techniques for a few minutes."  *She was more than pleased to find that she was being understood.  At least, nobody raised their hand to ask if they did have any questions.  What a bright class, she thought to herself slightly more optimistic than she usually was.  Professor Llaria then let herself off of her broom, doing it in such a way that the class could note on how, precisely, she did it.  Her robes fluttered down around her legs as she came to stand on firm ground.  Hopefully the students would retain the right and proper way...and not become lazy.*

"Now class.  Back on the ground please.  Ahh...very good.  Thank you.  How attentive.  And that now boring part is done.  I would like each of you to go through an obstacle course for me.  You will hover over, under, and through some obstacles.  This should be somewhat entertaining....I will not, however, permit laughing.  It may be you who becomes caught up...and how would you like that?  Let's see.  Who will go first...?  You may go only if you feel comfortable with all of the exercises we have completed moments before.  If not, please feel free to continue practicing within the roped off areas to your right.  I would not want to pressure you into going through this obstacle course unless you are ready.  Mentally and physically."

((To pass through these obstacles, you must answer the questions correctly.  The questions will become increasingly harder as you progress.  One mistake and the rest of the questions, right or wrong, will not count. Just like you would f you tripped over something and had to be rushed the Madame Pomfrey's or you had become discouraged.  So please try to answer all of the questions and correctly!  Good luck.))

*Professor Llaria nods to a student who raised their hand to come up and brave the test first.  The test looked to be very easy to the excited student...~ You made your way to the beginning of the course by hovering.  When the new professor, Llaria, gave you a nod you began your way through.  After going through the past exercises you should have an easy time of it.  First comes a small swamp looking place.  You had to hover over it...(1. What must you say to "call your broom"?).  Afterwards, there appears to be a series of hoops you had to hover through, they were at same height, thankfully enough...(2. List six broomsticks.).*

*Only then could you travel beneath a fallen log...(3.  What is a besom?).  Once past that tricky bit, you had to go through another set of hoops, only these were spaced very closely together and a bit trickier to go through.  You had to be able to pull up and down on your broomstick fairly well with a versatility...(4.  Who invented the Cushioning Charm and when?).  Once through that bit, you had to go over a small conjured wall...(5. True or false: brooms are "a symbol of female domesticity"?).  And finally, you had to land on a small red "x"... (6. Where can you find this quote: "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live."?  How does this quote relate to broomsticks?)*

*You notice that no matter how good or bad you had done, everyone clapped for you.  For you had given it your best shot.  Professor Llaria nods her appreciation to you and then excuses you for the rest of the class.  You could watch everyone else's trials, or you could go and work on a bit of the other assignments for the other classes.*
