Informative Speech

PURPOSE: To inform a particular audience on a subject. Your audience may fall into one of three categories: very informed, slightly informed, not-at-all informed. If the audience is very informed, you need to find new information or new ways of using what knowledge the audience possesses. If the audience is slightly informed, decide how to enhance the knowledge base. The audience may be unclear about how the knowledge relates to each person, how to use the knowledge, or how the knowledge benefits each person. The third category, not-at-all informed, needs to hear the basic information. Don't give too much detail or this audience will be overwhelmed.

You may give one of 3 informative speech types:

  1. Speech of definition: define a word, process, idea
  2. Speech of description: describe a person, place, object, experience
  3. Speech of explanation: explain an issue or an event.
