An Acquaintance with
the Dump
(aka Retaining
the Retainer)
BY: ae
Such a perfect morning
it was
One like any other
Little birds hopped
and chirped,
Squirrels scampered
and chattered,
Rustling leaves whispered,
Clouds of silk billowed
and floated
Promising a storm
in the afternoon
And then, it happened
. . .
BEEP, BEEP, BEEP
Peaceful slumber stolen,
shattered,
Sweet dreams of chocolate
dashed,
I stumbled out of
my high bed,
Feeling as if I had
downed a box of sudafed
Legs flying, arms
flailing,
I slipped and hit
the floor with a thud
Growling and glaring,
I stomped to the bathroom,
Prepared to wash like
I had been through the mud
Same as other weeks,
It was off to church
we went
All except for father
dearest,
For sick in bed he
was
And only because of
that,
Was the decision to
stop made
Full from lunch,
Desiring nothing more
to munch,
Piled into the van
we did,
Ignoring the bothersome
hunch,
Suggesting I'd lost
something after brunch
Returning home,
I kicked of my shoes,
Planning to work at
the puter
Before taking a snooze
Lo and behold, it
hit me then,
Something bare and
odd,
Bringing an instant
change to me mien,
It was gone, by todd!
Frantic,
Fearful,
Fretting for my pocketbook,
I searched,
And searched,
No where to be found,
Not even under Nate,
I grew tearful and
unsound,
Broken to think I'd
been responsible for its fate
So off to Wendy's
we went,
Sick father in the
driver's seat,
Fighting off the menu
people,
Pleading and begging,
For permission to
dig through the dump
Granted at last,
He led us to the dumpster
Four bags were pulled
out, left for sake
Ordered to go slow
and not fast,
I dug through with
heroic determination,
Searching bags of
half-eaten hamburgers,
French fries,
And chicken nuggets
But, at last, I found
it!
Buried in a baked
potatoe,
Smothered with sour
cream,
And I fought the urge
to hug it
Lost,
But now found,
I returned home,
Only to be bound,
For, once more, church
ground
