Father Wilhelm Kleinsorge

"A German priest, [was] lay[ing] on a cot in the mission house reading a Jesuit magazine..."

"Father Kleinsorge is a thirty-eight year-old German missionary with the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). He loves the Japanese people and is committed to his work in Hiroshima but feels uncomfortable with the xenophobia of war-time Japan. Since he only recieved small cuts in the blast he spent the whole time taking care of hurt people. Years later, he suffers from debilitating effects of the radiation. Over the years after the bomb he develops an even greater dedication to the Japanese which leads him to seek citizenship and adopt the Japanese name of Father Makoto Takakura. He runs a small church, to which he is very dedicated. He often reads the bible and timetables to pass the time. On November 19, 1977 he died at the St. Luke's Hospital in Kobe. It was also noted that after his death there were almost always fresh flowers on his grave."
