"A young surgeon, [who was] walk[ing] along a hospital corridor with a blood specimen for a Wasserman test..."
"Dr. Sasaki is an idealistic, young surgeon working at the Hiroshima Red Cross Hospital. (No relation to Ms. Sasaki). He is the only uninjured doctor from the bomb, and in the chaotic aftermath, he treats thousands of victims from all over the city for three days straight with only one hour of sleep. After those three days he returns to his mother's house in Mukaihara, where he sleeps for 17 straight hours. When he woke up he returned to the hospital and continued treating thousands of patients, one which happened to be Miss Toshinki Sasaki, to whom he felt a kinmanship for due to the shared name. After 5 years of treating bomb victims, he moves to Mukaihara to escape from the memories of the attack by starting his own private clinic. He prospers greatly and tries to forget that he is a hibakusha, or bomb victim. He marries and has 2 sons and 2 daughters. Later they found that he has lung cancer, and 'almost dies'. After this expirience he starts living his life to help others and spend more time with his family. He opens up a geriatric hospital, then a public bathhouse. Though thought odd by Japanese doctors, he lived a very fullfilling life after the big disaster."
