President Bush made his first speech to a joint session of Congress last night. In his speech, he referred to his plan for Social Security. Here is an excerpt: "This spring I will form a presidential commission to reform Social Security. The commission will make its recommendations by next fall. Reform should be based on these principles: It must preserve the benefits of all current retirees and those nearing retirement. It must return Social Security to sound financial footing. And it must offer personal savings accounts to younger workers who want them."

Speaking of online services ... one of our most popular is the Field Office Locator. Our customers perform about 300,000 searches per month from here. You'll remember that if you simply type in your ZIP code, the locator will give you the address, map, and directions to your local Social Security office. Bookmark this site. We've recently added contact information for many local agencies that can help you with services such as Medicaid, welfare, health needs, etc. An oldie, but goody. Check it out again.

One of our highest priorities is to help people with disabilities achieve independence by helping them take advantage of employment opportunities. The "Red Book" is a great reference tool for educators, advocates, rehabilitation professionals, and counselors who advise people with disabilities. We also encourage applicants and beneficiaries to take a look and use this booklet as a self-help guide to the employment-related provisions under our programs. You'll want to find out what's new for 2001.

Perhaps you are starting a new job and need your Social Security card. Maybe you put it in a safe place, and now you can't find it. Well, you definitely want to be sure you've got the number right, because we can't credit your earnings properly if you give the wrong Social Security number to your employer. So if you need to request a replacement card, you can find the application online (download it or print it). Did you know that last year alone we issued 11 million replacement cards? Remember to be careful with your Social Security number and card and protect your privacy whenever possible.

Chances are your first and most continuing link with Social Security is through your Social Security number. This is how we keep an accurate record of your Social Security earnings. But you may be interested to know that: - About 415 million Social Security cards have been issued since 1936, of which 217 million remain active. - There are about one billion possible number combinations. - As of last year, about 40 percent of the possible combinations were used. - There are enough number combinations to last us to the end of the century. More neat info is available, just in case you're curious.
