Detroit history: A childhood friend of Eminem's, Proof hosted the rap battles at the now-defunct record and clothing store, the Hip-Hop Shop. He was a founding member of rap group D12 and continues to tour with Eminem as his hype man. He still records with D12 and his other group, Promatic, which features fellow Detroit rapper Dogmatic, and is also at work on various solo projects.
Scene in film: Lil' Tic is the first person to battle Eminem's character, Rabbit, in the film's opening sequence. Proof says he and Em have never battled in real life, although Proof won a Source award in January 1999 as the best unsigned rapper in America.
"I auditioned for lots of scenes, but I was given that one because of the battle element," Proof says. "They were like, 'If it's gonna be anybody, it's got to be the best battle rapper in Detroit.' " The rhyme Lil' Tic delivers: "Punish Rabbit or Obsolete Future" spells the acronym PROOF.
