History of the Pool League
|
The pool league was started in the mid 70's and was put together by Joyce and Tony Hammond who owned 87 Ice at 4922 Rigsby in San Antonio, Texas. The group was called Southeast Independent Pool League and retained that name for a few years. When the league was formed it was intended for the members to only play in a close proximity to their homes, as before so many complained about having to drive all over the city to play in other leagues. Now of course, we have members that live from one end of this metropolis to the other and don't complain about the long drive since they have so much fun! After some new officers ran into problems, Joyce broke from that league and formed another group and it has been called the 8 Baller's Club ever since. The original Sponsors for the 8 Baller's Club were: 87 Ice, Italian Archway (now called Archway), Big T Ice, Hi Slope Ice, Smitty's Cafe, Pleasant Hill, Big Johns, Silver Slipper, Bahr's Corner, Jack & Georgia's, Leonard's Ice, and Pleasant Hill. The Club only plays on Wednesday nights. The Club has had as many as 30 teams in the 80's and as few as 14 teams since so many more pool leagues have been formed in the 90's. The 8 Baller's Club has always prided itself by promoting good sportsmanship and places to play to have fun! Everyone gets to know each other within the Club because of it's size. The Rules and By-laws were written by the forming officers, and today are confirmed by each league by it's members from the past league, as many have been added over the years. The Club is very strict on the behavior of it's members since there are quite a few ladies playing in the league. Any member that causes a problem has been, and can be, banned from the Club for life.
