Nice visuals but not much else:5

Silpheed: The Lost Planet is a fairly decent shooter, but overall is not much more. This game looks like a million bucks but the gameplay is only mediocre at best. The view is top down similar to Radiant Silvergun. So whats good about it and what went wrong. Well the graphics are top notch. They have to be simply some of the best in any shooter game ever. That really is not saying that much but I believe it has the best graphics of all of the PS2 launch games. The controls are on target as I had no problems what so ever with dodging bullets or anything else that tries to destroy my ship.

So whats wrong? Well plenty to be exact. First of all the mission breifings are such a snoozefest. The voice sounds so monotone and absolutely boring it reminded me of some cheesy space movie from the 80’s with the generic android speaking. Thankfully you can skip it. Also if you are looking to powerup your weapons throughout the game like on a Darius game you can forget it simply because there are no powerups to be found at all. That means generic weak weapons throughout the game. The upside is the cool novelty of being able to change your weapon halfway each level. It would prove better if you could simply just change your weapon on the fly because if you pick a crappy combonation of weapons, one on the left turret and one on the right, you will die pretty quick. Finally I found absolutely NO replay value at all. I had no desire at all to play this game again, in fact it has only been played twice by me.

So is it a buy or a rent? Well if you can find a copy for less than $10 then I think it is worth a buy, but even at that measly price it is kind of a stretch. My suggestion is to rent it, play it and return it the next day because you can beat this game in one sitting and once you do it will simply be taking up space because you will not play this game again. Nice eye candy but just to bland on the fun department.
