Illusion is a Teddy Bear
By: Carol Huber
Illusion is a teddy bear
It eases all my fear
I hold it while I sleep at night
I always keep it near
Illusion keeps me safe you see
Protects me from all harm
It keeps the monsters far away
It’s sort of like a charm
It distracts me from my pain
It’s soft and warm to cuddle
But if I hold it tightly
My mind begins to muddle
It gives me reassurance
Though it changes shape when squished
But still it bounces back again
Just not like I had wished
Now it doesn’t work as well
The monsters slide right through
I’m losing my illusion now
Seeing only what is true
Illusion, faded, patched and torn
It works no more for me
I have to trust to love and truth
For my security
Illusion I now let you go
Your price is far too steep
But I’ll not walk my way alone
My teddy bear I’ll keep

Carol Huber describes herself as a “ Wordsmith, Performance Poet, Recovering Survivor of Abuse, Once upon a time, I had the unofficial job title of 'Paradox Lady.' I liked it so well, I kept it. I'm somewhat known in Dallas Poetry Circles for both solo performance poetry, and as a member of "A Fine Piece of Mischief," an ensemble group of very fine female poets. My writings ask questions, pose challenges, and sometimes, offer answers. All answers are offered with this reminder: What works for me, may or may not work for anyone else. . .”
