The Phoenix

The Phoenix
By: Connie Bryd Whiting

From the ashes
of a searing past
I have risen
like a phoenix
lifting up into
the sky

Shedding parts
of who I
once
had been

Changing
slowly into
what I will
become

Leaving burning
embers of my
pain
lying
in the ash
where they
belong
I savor
the rewards
of reaching far
into my soul
and
nurturing that
which makes
me
strong

In the sky
I look down to
see
my past mistakes
so small upon
the
blackened ground
After a lifetime of
condemning
calling out to
me
they now utter
not a sound
As I spread my new
found wings to soar
the thought occurs
Maybe they
are silent now
because I'm
not listening
anymore
