The MKII Mod

This is the modification of my canard from a MKI landing gear configuration(wheels on the wingtip) to the MKII (standard tricycle landing gear)

There are LOTS of pics on this page, so I hope it's worth the wait!

This is how the previous owner left the project: The wingtip landing gear was cut off, and the slots for the landing gear boxes were cut. The elevator fairings were started, but not completed.

Visible in the left of the picture are the ribs which will form the support structure for the aluminum "C" channels that carry the landing loads to the canard skin.

Laying out the hole spacing.

The holes are drilled through all 4 pieces at once.

The first test assembly. This final shape will be tweaked to fit inside the canard.

This shows the cavity that will eventually house the LG leg.

This shows the installation of a self-locking nut plate. A bolt will go through the gear leg, and into this nut plate, serving to retain the leg in the socket.

After the assemblies are fit to the canard cut outs, the have to be filled with foam so the canard skin later retains it's shape.

It's been a long day to this point... here Im applying a wet coat of epoxy before I assemble the individual pieces.

Here are the assemblies with the foam micro'd in place. I borrowed Pat's idea to slice the foam diagonally to prevent rubbing all the micro off the foam when installing the foam into the box assembly.

It's 24 hours later. I've sanded the foam to the contour of the ribs.

Here is the canard, leveled pretty darn close with a water level. This level reference is very important for the steps to come......

Stay tuned!
