Random Italy Pics by Anne
For spring break this year (2001), I took a lil trip to the country of Italy. We went through Florence, Venice, and along the coast. Ok, here's the pics.
On a boat in Venice. Well, it was like a subway thing, only it was boats, because there isn't a subway. Duh.
My sister, my dad, and I in front of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. Some Venetian merchants smuggled his body out (under pork!) and into Venice, where it now is.
My dad, me, and Katie on the Ponte Veccio Bridge in Venice. Or, as my mom called it, the shopping bridge.
This is a little dock where some gondolas go for repair, etc. in Venice.
On a gondola in Venice. I was so scared of falling off and into the Grand Canal. I can swim, but still...Plus, I had my new camera.
The Grand Canal in Venice. The building across the way is the most photographed building on the Grand Canal. It's very pretty and very old. No wonder it's so photographed, people like me keep photographing it because it's the most photographed building!
Me on a boat in Venice in front of the Ponte Veccio (a.k.a. the shopping bridge). Plus, there's a fun little gondola to the side.
After the first night, we got sick of restaurants and stuff, so we just bought fresh pasta and made our own dinners. Here's dinner in the apartment we rented in Venice. I look really overdone, my makeup must have run when I took my shower.
Katie and I posing in front of David (by Michelangelo) in the Plaza Michelangelo. It's not the real David, it's one of the 2 casts/molds (i can never get those two straight) that was made of the original, which is now in some museum.
The famous bridge in Florence. Yes, it is a shopping bridge just like the Ponte Veccio in Venice. But this one used to be a market, but the dude who owned the bridge didn't like the smell, so he kicked the sellers out and rented the property to a bunch of jewelers. It's still that way today.
This is what I found most ironic during my trip. This is the tomb of Galileo, in the Santa Croce church. He's buried there, along w/ other greats: Michelangelo, Machiavelli, and oodles of other famous (dead) people. But Galileo was accused of blasphemy by the Catholic Church and they excommunicated him. I just love Catholics. I am a Catholic. oops.
Two different cityscapes of Florence. Such a pretty city. Woah, that sorta rhymed!
This is us eating in a ristorante in Florence with Simon, Katie's best friend's boyfriend. (He's doing a semester abroad) The Italians have wine, even with lunch. Lunch was a 3 course meal. Yummy.
Me on the veranda of the apartment we rented in Florence. Let me tell you, that was one nice apartment. And it was decorated in classic Italian style. It was really big, too!
Me in front of this pretty fountain in Siena. Ok, I admit it, that's a gratuitous butt shot.
Katie and me in Siena. There were lots of Italian schoolboys (whistle, whistle) playing soccer. Man, they had some serious soccer skills.
Look, it's a bird! It's a plane! It's...I have absolutely no idea. But the picture amuses me. :)
The whole family in front of the leaning tower of Pisa. Ok, the next 3 pictures are the best!
Katie doing a headstand in front of the leaning tower of Pisa while I hold her legs...
Me, trying to duplicate her stunt...But failing. And falling. And laughing.
Finally, success! Woohoo! I got my headstand in! Yay!
Dad and I in front of some famous church in Pisa. The church is on the banks of the Arno, the river that runs through Pisa.
Katie and I in Portofino. It's the fancy, expensive town on the Italian coast, in the part known as the Italian Riviera. Yes, rain. I love the rain.
Fun Websites! (woohoo!)
