“Who is that?”
“I don’t know.”
“I’ve never seen her.”
Kassidy smirked as she heard the whispers. She had to admit she was achieving the affect she wanted. She was wearing black leather pants and a halter-top. Her black leather jacket was slung over her shoulder and you could hear the click of her boots on the cement floor. She was carrying her duffel bag. She had gone total rocker chick when she left the house that morning to catch her plane. She was hooking up with Nick at the Fleet Center in Boston where Metallica were kicking off the tour that night, which happened to also be New Year’s Eve. She wasn’t sure how Nick would handle the look, but it was her armor. She had talked to him throughout the week and he was having a great time. She was nervous about being around the other bands that went out of their way to be rude about Backstreet. An arm around her shoulder made her jump.
“Well missy don’t you look hot.”
“Hi James. How are you?”
“I’m good, but not as good as your boyfriend when he sees you.”
“Do you think he will like it?”
“If he doesn’t all the guys watching you walk down through here will. Nick’s in our dressing room.”
James made her wait outside the door. He told Nick there was a fan outside wanting for an autograph. Nick gave him a suspicious glance, but opened the door. He did a double take when he saw Kassi, then kissed her. After breaking the kiss he made her turn around for him.
“I’ve never seen you dressed like that,” he said as he watched her.
“You don’t like it.”
“No me likes. Me likes alot.”
“Really?”
“Really,” he said as he pulled her into another kiss.
“Break it up you two,” teased James.
“Yeah don’t we get to meet her,” asked Lars.
“Oh yeah. Guys this is Kassidy. Kassidy these are the guys.”
“Hi guys.”
“Hi Kassidy,” they replied.
“So was he a complete pain this week.”
“The worst,” teased Lars with a wink.
“Thought so. I will punish him for you,” replied Kassidy.
“Kassi,” scolded Nick with a grin.
“What? I’m an angel.”
“I believe it,” said Kirk.
They continued to talk until it was time for the band's meet and greet. Nick showed Kassidy the stage. He introduced her to the other bands. They were polite and for the most part seemed friendly to Nick. They went back to Mettalica’s dressing room where the band was warming up. Lars pulled Nick over to talk while a massage therapist worked on his arms. Kassidy went over to James.
“Thanks James. He looks like he had a great time.”
“He’s a good guy. We all had a good time.”
“So were there any problems with him being a Backstreet Boy.”
“The first day he was here Dexter from Offspring tried to start something. Nick held his ground. Dexter backed down. Lars and I had a talk with them and they backed off.”
“Thanks.”
“Anytime. The only problem we had was he wouldn’t shut up about you.”
“What?”
“I’m teasing, but it’s obvious he loves you. And he’s right, you are cute when you blush.”
“Shut up. Go back to warming up.”
Nick and Kassidy watched the bands from the side of the stage. James called them on stage as they counted down the New Year. The crowd was surprised to see a Backstreet Boy, but James said they were old friends. Confetti was released and they kissed.
There was a party afterwards. They stayed until Nick had enough of watching Kassidy in her leather pants. He wanted her alone. They said goodnight and headed up stairs where they proceeded to make up for lost time.
The following day Metallica had rented out one of the hotel’s ballrooms and had a big screen TV brought in. Everyone watched football.
Nick and Kassidy watched the show from the side of the stage again that night. After the show they said goodbye to James and everyone else. The bands got on buses and headed out. The couple went back to the hotel; they weren’t flying out until the next morning.
On the plane, Nick whispered, “Thanks for making this last week happen. It was great.”
“I’m glad you had a good time.”
“The only thing missing was you, but seeing you in those leather pants and little top was so worth it.”
“Do you want me to dress like that more often?”
“Anytime you want.”
“When do I get to see you in leather? Other than on stage.”
“Don’t know. Guess I need to get some leather pants.”
“Yes you do.”
“Yes ma’am.”
They talked the rest of the flight home. Since Kassidy was only gone two days the dogs had stayed home. Lily had stopped by to check on them and left a casserole.
Late in the afternoon, Kassidy got a call from an old Nashville friend, Dena. Dena was in town with Edwin McCain. She was his production assistant. Kassidy had remembered how excited Dena was when she got the job. They had kept in touch via email mainly. Dena invited them to Edwin’s show that night. She knew how much Kassidy loved Edwin’s music. Nick also knew of her love of Edwin McCain and thought this would be the right night for what he had planned.
Dena met them at the door and took them backstage. She introduced them to Edwin. They laughed and talked until it was almost showtime. When Dena pulled Kassidy out of the dressing room for a moment, Nick recruited Edwin for his surprise.
Dena lead them out to the front of the stage. Kassidy spent the night dancing and singing. Nick stood right behind her and tried to calm his nerves. Finally the moment came.
“This is the last song of the night, I’m sure everyone knows it. However, tonight I’ve been asked by a new friend of mine to dedicate it to his girl. Kassidy, Nick promises what this song promises…” trailed off Edwin as the song began.
The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful
Stop me and steal my breath
Emeralds from mountains thrust towards the sky
Never revealing their depth
Tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love
I'll be captivated
I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above
I'll be your cryin' shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
Rain falls angry on the tin roof
As we lie awake in my bed
You're my survival, you're my living proof
My love is alive and not dead
Tell me that we belong together
Dress it up in the trappings of love
I'll be captivated
I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above
I'll be your cryin' shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
I've dropped out, burned up, fought my way back from the dead
Tuned in, turned on, remembered the thing you said
I'll be your cryin' shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life
As the song ended, Kassidy turned to Nick. She was crying. She caressed his cheek and pulled him into a kiss. He broke the kiss and pulled her to the back.
“Kassi there is something I have to ask you.”
“What?”
“I meant what he sang. I am your greatest fan. I promise I will get better as I get older.”
“I think you're great now.”
“Damn this isn’t coming out right.”
“Just say it Nick.”
Nick took a deep breath, then asked, “Kass will you marry me?”
Kassidy paused for a moment, so he continued, “think about it.”
“I don’t have to. Nick I will marry you.”
“You will?”
“Yes!”
“WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!”
“So folks I take it we’re engaged,” stated Edwin as he came backstage.
“Yep,” answered Nick.
“Congratulations,” exclaimed Dena. “Let me see the ring.”
“Don’t have one,” answered Kassidy.
“I hadn’t gotten to that part yet,” stated Nick, pulling a box out of his pants pocket. He opened it to reveal a round diamond solitaire.
“Excellent choice,” complimented Dena.
Nick placed the ring on Kassidy’s finger. She kissed him then they all went back to the dressing room. Soon they went home and made love into the early morning hours. For once Kassidy didn’t rush to organize things. She didn’t call anyone. She was content to savior this special time with Nick. Everyone would find out soon enough.
Chapter 56
“James has something to ask you,” stated Nick as he handed Kassidy the phone a week later.
“Hetfield what do you want,” teased Kassidy.
“Do you like the ring?”
“Yes. Why do you care?”
“Because I went with him to pick it out.”
“Will wonders never cease?”
“Doubt it,” laughed James. “I better be invited to the wedding.”
“Do I have to?”
“Woman don’t even.”
“Yes you will get an invitation, when we finally get around to doing it. Here’s Nick again.”
Nick took the phone and wandered out of the room. Kassidy stretched and got off the couch. The dogs followed her into the kitchen where she got them some fresh water and herself some tea. She looked out over the backyard to the bay. Nick moved behind her. Wrapping his arms around her waist he kissed the top of her head. Kassidy giggled.
“What,” asked Nick.
“I can just see you and James Hetfield in a jewelry store looking at rings.”
Nick smiled, “yeah the people in the store did give us some strange looks. The owner waited on us. He didn’t think I could afford the rings I was looking at. He kept trying to move me down to the 1/8-carat rings. You should have seen his face when he came back with the receipt. He asked if he could show me anything else in the store.”
“Serves him right. By the way, this is pretty big. I hope it wasn’t too expensive.”
“Shhh. It was the right price. Are you saying you don’t like?”
“No,” exclaimed Kassidy as she turned in his arms to face him. “It’s amazing. I just don’t think I will ever get use to the money aspect of your life.”
“It’s our life and it’s OK, cause you got a whole lifetime to get use to it. Come in the office I want to show you what I did.”
Kassidy followed him down the hall. Nick pulled out a sketchbook he had purchased the day he left with James. He handed it to Kassidy and sat down beside her. She flipped through the sketches. They were all drawings of the bands on tour with Metallica. He had captured each person at a great moment.
“Nick these are wonderful,” exclaimed Kassidy causing him to smile.
“I like that one,” he stated as she came to a picture in the middle of the pad.
It was of the four members of Metallica. They were all gathered around Lars’ drums. Nick caught them in the middle of working on a new song. Kassidy agreed it captured them. She moved on through the many pages of drawings. As she got to the back, she looked at Nick and he just smiled. She turned the page to find one of her playing with the dogs. A drawing of her laughing with his brother and sisters followed this. The next picture was her lying on their bed asleep. A sheet covered only her bottom. The last picture was of her standing by their bed at the house in the Keys. She blushed, because he had drawn her nude.
“Nick when did you do these?”
“At night after I talked to you. I couldn’t sleep so I would draw.”
“Your memory is definitely kind to me,” chuckled Kassidy looking back at the last picture.
“No my memory is accurate. Baby that is how you look, all woman and all sexy.”
“Nick where are your other sketch pads?”
“All over.”
“I want to see all the ones you’ve got.”
For the next three hours they searched the house for all his sketchbooks. Once they had a good pile of them, Kassidy started looking through all of them. She divided them into categories. Nick asked what she was doing. She only said she would explain when she was done looking. Finally the last book had been looked through.
“Nick do you realize you have enough drawings here for a one man show?”
“Yeah like anyone would want to see them.”
“I think people would. Nick these are amazing. Do you realize how talented you are?”
“It’s no big deal.”
“I think it’s a big deal. Would you mind if I took some photos of these and sent them to two friends?”
“What friends?”
“I have two artist friends’ in Nashville. Both are well known and had numerous showings. I will get them to send pictures of their work for you to see.”
“OK, but why send them pictures of mine?
“To get their opinion.”
“What?”
“Don’t freak Nick. I know you don’t believe me when I tell you how good these are. I think if my friends like your work then you might just realize it.”
“I don’t know,” said Nick.
“Think about it. I’m not going to make you do something you don’t want to.”
“I don’t guess it hurts for your friends to see them," he said with hesitation.
“Tell ya what…I will take the pictures of them and then you can decide.”
“OK,” he said as he pulled her to him.
“Carter what are you doing?”
“I’m getting ready to kiss you Rivers.”
Kassidy smiled as Nick kissed her nose. He brushed his lips against hers before covering them. Kassidy sighed as he pulled back. He looked into her eyes. He liked how the colors in them intensified when she was excited. She pulled him into another kiss. He moaned as she nibbled on his lips. His hands moved to her shirt unbuttoning it. Soon it and her bra were gone. He allowed her to break their kiss long enough to pull his shirt over his head, then he captured her mouth again. They quickly rid themselves of the remainder of their clothes. Nick was still sitting on the floor when Kassidy straddled him. He moaned as she teased him with her hands and then her body. He tried to push inside her but she moved. She smiled then went to work on his neck. Nick growled when she scraped her teeth across his neck. His hands tangled in her hair and still she teased him.
“Baby don’t tease me anymore,” he said.
“But Nicky doesn’t it feel good?”
“Yes, but Kass it would feel so good to be inside you.”
“Like this,” asked Kassidy as she sat down on him.
“Oh yes.”
Kassidy said, “I will keep that in mind.”
Nick’s eyes flew open as he felt her move off him again and go back to teasing him. She just smiled and continued her torture.
“Kassi please.”
“I don’t know,” she trailed as she pushed him back and captured his nipple in her mouth.
Nick bit his lip and moaned as he felt her pull. She then moved to the other nipple and did the same. Still her body was moving against him. He looked at her when she sat up again. He decided two could play this game. He repeated her actions on her nipples. She gasped and she tightened her grip on his shoulders.
“Does Kass like?” he asked.
“Yes, but I’m not giving you what you want yet.”
“Damn baby you are being so mean.”
“Oh baby do you need me to stop?
“NO!”
“Didn’t think so.”
She continued to tease him until he thought he would explode. She watched him closely. Before he completely lost control, she gave him what he wanted. They kissed and their hands roamed, but they didn’t move. Kassidy waited until Nick had regained control of his body. She pulled back from his lips and smirked as she started to move on him. She was rewarded with a moan and look of ecstasy. She moved on him setting the pace. When Nick could take no more he grabbed her hips and began to move her.
He whispered against her lips, “you make me crazy sometimes.”
“I know,” she replied.
Kassidy was now moving at the pace he set, but he didn’t move his hands. She kissed him as her body lost control. She continued to move on him until he moaned her name and filled her. They were both breathing hard as they kissed.
“Office has now been christened,” chuckled Kassidy.
“Yes it has. Wow,” said Nick.
The phone ringing interrupted their moment. Nick reached over to the desk and pulled the phone off. It was Brian calling to see how he liked his Christmas present. Kassidy started to move off him but he held her in place. She lay her head on his shoulder and listened to his side of the conversation. He reached for her left hand and tapped the ring. She nodded. He told Brian they were engaged. They talked more and Nick promised to have Kassi call Leighanne later. After he hung up he held her tightly.
“What’s wrong Nicky?”
“Nothing. I just love you so much. I don’t want to let go.”
“I love you too baby and you can hold me as long as you want.”
They both laughed when they heard Nick’s stomach growl a few minutes later.
“If you’re hungry Carter just say so.”
“I think my stomach just did.”
“You know what this means.”
“We have to moved.”
“Yep.”
Kassidy stood up and offered him her hand. He stood. Kassidy reached down and picked up his shorts and T-shirt. She handed him the shorts and pulled the T-shirt over her head. He smiled as he watched her pick up the rest of the clothes. Slipping into the shorts he followed her out of the room.
As they ate they decided it was time to let everyone know they were engaged. They agreed everyone did not include management and Nick's parents. Management would not be happy with the potential media circus they would be dealing with after the announcement. And the quickest path to the Enquirer was through Jane Carter. They didn't trust her to remember the legal agreement she had signed the previous year.
Kassidy called Lee and Michael first. They were both happy for her. She then called Grace. Grace was excited for her. While she was on the phone with Grace, Nick stretched out on the couch and put his head in her lap. He watched her while she talked. She reached down and started playing with his hair. She was rewarded with contented sigh.
Grace was still looking for a job. She had talked to the director of the Florida Chapter of the National Music Therapist Association. They didn't have a job, but they were interested in her for a PR job opening up. With her high profile, they wanted her to fill the job. The wife of a Backstreet Boy would draw more attention to Music Therapy. Grace was wary of the job. For one she really didn’t see herself as a public speaker. Two, she didn’t want to use AJ and the guys that way, and three, AJ was not happy about the thought of her being gone when he might be home. They would never see each other. Kassidy asked when she had to give them an answer and was told two weeks. She told Grace not to worry the right answer would present itself.
After hanging up, Kassidy handed the phone to Nick. He called his brother and sisters. Finally, they called the Richardsons and Doroughs. So all the people who would support them knew. The rest would have to wait.
Chapter 57
“AJ let me talk,” said an exasperated Grace.
They had been arguing for the last 20 minutes. Rather Grace had said one thing and AJ had ranted the rest of the time.
“Talk.”
“I didn’t say I was taking the job, only they called again.”
“So you’re not taking it,” asked AJ.
“I don’t know.”
“Grace we will never see each other,” exclaimed AJ.
“You don’t know that,” replied Grace.
“I’m going on tour and you are going to travel if you take this job. Our schedules will never work out.”
Grace loosing patients, snapped, “What do you want me to do Alex? Travel with you and play wife?”
“Is it so bad being my wife that you have to play? And what would be so wrong with traveling with me?”
“Nothing AJ and you know I love being your wife, so don’t even go there! AJ why did I just spend the last two years busting my ass to get this degree, if I’m not going to do something with it? Granted I won’t be actually working in one place with the same group of kids all the time, but it still uses what I’ve learned to help people. You’re asking me to give up something that is important to me.”
“Is it more important than me?”
“God Alex! If being with me is that important then quit the group and everything else, then you can travel me.”
“Grace,” started AJ.
She interrupted, “See it’s not so simple when it’s you giving up what you love doing.”
“I’m scared.”
“Of what?”
“Of losing you.”
“It’s not going to happen, besides I haven’t accepted yet. Can we just not think about it right now? We need to get ready for the party. We can talk about it tomorrow and then I will give them our decision on Monday.”
“Alright Pooh. You know I love you right?”
“Yes and I love you too you big goof.”
They dropped the issue for the time being and got ready for a party Jive was throwing to celebrate another banner year. Jive was paying extra attention to the Backstreet Boys because their contract was up in three months and they had been unable to lock the group into a new one.
AJ and Grace arrived at Planet Hollywood in downtown Orlando, where the party was being held. They were all smiles, but both were thinking about the earlier conversation. They didn’t want to be separated more then absolutely necessary. They had done that enough before they married. However, AJ knew this was important to Grace. He made a decision to let her take the job if she wanted. Grace was torn, but figured a solution would come. She would never do anything to jeopardize her marriage, even if it meant turning down the job.
“Hey you two,” greeted Kassidy as she walked up to them.
“Hey Kass,” replied Grace as she hugged her friend.
“Kass I never took you for the leather type,” commented AJ as he collected his hug.
“Bone you will never know me as well as you think you do.”
“So I’m learning. Where is everyone?”
“This way,” directed Kassidy.
The three friends made their way over to the tables set up for Backstreet. The Richardsons were the last to arrive. There was much smoozing being done by the Jive folks. All of BSB sat back trying not to laugh. It was amazing how things changed. Jive had done this before when they locked the guys into the last contract. The guys had not been happy when Jive signed NSYNC, but the company had assured them Backstreet was their first priority. Unfortunately, they had turned around and proved themselves wrong when they put everything they had into promoting NSYNC. They realized their tactical error when Backstreet’s third US Album was a hit with less promotion. Jive had been fighting an uphill battle ever since.
However, they were unaware the guys were talking to LA Reid, President of Arista Records. Reid had taken over as President in 2000, after the much publicized forced retirement of record industry icon, Clive Davis. Reid had come in under difficult circumstances and made the label even more successful. When he took over at Arista, he put BSB on his list of acts to add to the label’s roster and waited patiently. The guys had not made a decision, but would have to soon.
“Nick I’m stealing your woman for a dance,” stated AJ as he pulled Kass out of her seat.
“Sure Bone.”
“Thanks for asking me,” chided Kassidy as they walked onto the dance floor.
“Anytime. Now tell me about the leather.”
“This really has gotten your attention,” noted Kassidy with a chuckle.
“Well I never took you for the leather pants kinda girl.”
“You didn’t know my in my early 20’s. I was a complete Rocker Chick.”
“So what changed?”
“I did. I thought grown up, responsible people didn’t dress this way.”
“Hey I dress like that.”
“You’re point?”
He stuck his tongue out at her then said, “now what changed?”
“Me again,” she teased then continued. “I pulled them out of the back of my closet when I went to join Nick on his Metallica adventure. They still fit and I decided I needed to go as rocker chick in case I needed to kick rocker ass.”
“I take it our little Nicky liked the look.”
“Yes he did, but there is another reason.”
“Which is,” prompted AJ.
“I figured out that grown up, responsible adults can dress however they choose.”
“Amen!”
“Now what’s up with you guys? Grace heard about a job?” Kassidy saw his eyes cloud over and asked, “What?”
“She got an offer from the national office of the Music Therapist Organization to be their spokesperson.”
“So why do I get the feeling that’s not a good thing in your book?”
“It means she will be traveling and I’ll be traveling…”
Kass finished, “and you will never see each other.”
“Exactly.”
“Bone why are you slow dancing with my woman on a fast song,” asked Nick, as he and Grace joined them.
“It’s the leather Nicky. It just does things to me,” teased AJ.
“Alexander James,” scolded Kassi. “Actually we were too busy talking to dance. He’s bad that way.”
“Yeah he is,” agreed Grace.
“I can hear you,” whined AJ.
“Dance with your wife Bone.”
“If I have too.”
“Keep it up Bone and you'll be very lonely tonight,” teased Grace.
“Pooh! I’m didn’t mean it.”
“Sometimes you are so easy,” said Grace, kissing him before he could say more.
The music slowed and Nick pulled Kass into his arms and said, “What were you talking about?”
“My pants then Grace’s job hunt.”
“Do I want to know?”
“Yes and no. I'll tell you later. For now just dance with me.”
“Yes ma’am.”
Nick pulled her closer to his body. Her hands slide into his hair as she rested her head against his chest. His hands drifted south and rested on her bottom. He loved feeling her move under the leather. They spent the rest of the night dancing.
After the party they went back to AJ and Grace’s for coffee. The guys were talking about their contract stuff. The women were in the kitchen, talking about Grace’s job offer.
“They want me to be their spokes person, but it would mean traveling and being away from AJ even more.”
“Grace have they given you a schedule,” asked Kassi.
“No they are pretty much leaving that up to whoever takes the job. Now why do you have that smile?”
“So why can’t you schedule you’re speaking engagements to coincide with the tour?”
“What do you mean,” asked Grace.
“I mean. Why can’t you schedule speaking engagements in the cities the guys are performing in? You know. Do luncheon meetings on show days and evening events on off nights. You travel with AJ and do this. They would pay for any plane tickets you used and give you all the things you receive normally.”
“That might work,” said Grace, getting excited.
“Yes it could,” agreed Leighanne. “Kassidy I’m going to call you the BSB Problem solver. Grace go tell AJ.”
“Come with me and we will break up their little meeting,” said Grace, walking into the livingroom.
“Come on preggers,” teased Kassi.
“Hey I’m not that big yet,” scolded Maddy.
“I know.”
“I take it we are now officially calling this meeting to a close,” stated Kevin, who was facing the door.
“Why,” asked Brian.
“Because our women walked in.”
“Come here woman,” ordered AJ.
“Yes caveman,” teased Grace as she sat beside him on the couch.
“Baby how are you feeling,” asked Howie as he pulled Maddy onto his lap.
“I’m tired.”
“That happens,” stated Leighanne.
“Yep. I would fall asleep with Kevin talking to me,” agreed Kristen.
“That happens to all of Kris,” joked Nick.
“Hey now,” warned Kevin.
AJ leaned over and said quietly.
“Pooh take the job if you want. I’m behind you all the way. We will make it work.”
“Actually the official BSB problem solver came up with a solution. Well, if the MTA goes for it.”
“Who,” asked Howie with a puzzled look.
“Kassidy,” replied all the women.
“Should of known. So what did OPS come up with,” questioned AJ.
“OPS,” asked a confused Grace.
“Official Problem Solver…OPS.”
“Oh!”
Grace laughed and explained Kassidy’s idea. He loved the idea, as did the others. Kevin said he would run it past James the next day as well as LA Reid. The guys had decided to change to Arista. They were finalizing everything with Arista and Jive would be notified afterwards. Grace would present the idea to the MTA the following day. Everyone said goodnight and headed to their respective cars.
As the McLean’s drove home, AJ said, “OPS is very good at her job.”
“Yes she is.”
“There is just one problem we need to get her to solve.”
“What’s that baby?”
“She needs to marry Nick.”
“That she does.”
