"Nick you have got to be kidding me," exclaimed AJ.
"What," asked Nick, playing innocent.
"Hello! You had a night alone with your woman and you two slept? Nick what's wrong with this picture?"
"We were tired," whined Nick.
Kassidy took the phone and said, "Bone we're rested now. You said you would bring the kids home when we were ready. We aren't ready, so they can stay another night. Right? You say yes Kassidy."
"Yes Kassidy."
"Good Bone. Here's Nicky."
Kassidy handed the phone back to Nick. He started talking to AJ again, but had to hang up when he felt Kassidy's mouth wrap around his hardness. Kassidy stopped and looked up.
"Through talking to Bone?"
He watched her mouth descend n him again and moaned "Oh God yes."
"You sure you don't want to call him back," she asked before sucking on the sensitive skin of his inner thigh.
"N-n-o. Kass don't stop."
"You want me to stop," she replied, blowing air over his tip.
"Kassidy," he groaned.
"Nickolas?"
"Please."
She smiled then closed her mouth on him. His fingers tangled in her hair as she moved on him. His back arched and he moaned. She teased him with her tongue. He was gasping for air. Her hands massaged the insides of his thighs. She picked up the pace and his hips moved with her. He groaned when he felt her nails on the insides of his thighs. With a shutter he released. Kassidy continued to move on him until his body relaxed. She rested her head on his thigh. He brushed the hair from her face. She kissed her way up his body. He kissed her mouth gently. Pulling her into a hug, they lay there enjoying the closeness.
"Stay," he whispered.
"Nick I'm here."
"I know, but you're leaving."
"Baby I have to go back to work," countered Kassidy.
"You don't have to work."
"Yes I do. I have a house payment to make and other things."
"If you stayed here you could sell the house."
"Nick I will not live off you."
"Kassidy you can."
"No. I love you Nick, but you've had too many people living off you for too long. I won't do it."
"But I need you."
"I need you too, but we need time."
"Kass we've taken 5 years. I want to be with you all the time starting now. I've waited long enough."
"Nick."
"No! Kass I love you. When is that ever going to be enough?"
Kassidy had no response. The look of sadness in those beautiful blue eyes almost killed her. He softly kissed her forehead before walking into the bathroom. Her tears fell silently as she heard the water turn on. She closed her eyes and the image of the water cascading over the body of the man she loved played out behind her eyelids. She prayed for guidance. It would be so easy to just stay there, but it wasn't that easy. She had to be responsible. She owed the people in Nashville that much.
She got out of bed and moved to the bathroom. She stood in the doorway for a moment, watching Nick standing under the water with his eyes closed. He was struggling with his emotions. She stepped in the shower and he slowly opened his eyes to look down at her.
"Nick I love you so much. I want to be here with you all the time. Don't doubt either of those things. However, imagine if I said you have to give up your career and move to Nashville, forgetting about your life here. Would you do it the second I asked?"
"Yes."
"Great! So you are going back with me?"
Nick's head dropped and he said, "No."
"It's not easy. Baby nothing about us has ever been easy. You take care of your family things. I will go back to Nashville and figure something out. OK?"
He nodded and pulled her into his arms. He bent to nuzzle her neck. She reached behind him and turned off the water. His kiss stole her breath.
She felt him lifting her off the ground and her legs automatically wrapped around his waist as he buried himself inside her. Breaking the kiss, he stepped out of the shower.
As he carried her to the bed, he whispered, "I love you. Only you. Always you."
"I love you. Only you. Always you," whispered Kassidy in reply.
He moved them onto the bed and began to thrust into her deeply. His Hands moving over her body. It seemed he was trying to memorize everything about her. He said 'always you' with every thrust. Kassidy's hands were also busy trying to memorize him. She turned her head to the side and for the first time caught a glimpse of them in the mirror of the dressing table he had bought her for Christmas. It stole her breath seeing their bodies intertwined. She could only see their bodies pushing into each other. Nick kissed her cheek and she guided his head so he could watch them too. He groaned and thrust harder, lifting her. She watched his body jerk as she gripped him trying to keep him inside her longer. They tore their eyes from the mirror and looked at one another. They had the same look of urgent need. The need for release from the sweet agony their bodies and souls were experiencing. Kassidy pulled Nick's face close, capturing his lips. Their lips were still pressed together when they climaxed. Their bodies twisting and pushing. Their bodies slowed before the kiss ended. Nick started to lie beside her.
"Not yet," whispered Kassidy tightening her legs around him.
Nick smiled, "You want me to stay here? Inside you?"
"Yes," she replied while gently tightening around him.
"Kass," he breathed.
"Yes?"
"Baby you keep doing that and I will," he trailed off.
"Get hard again?"
He said, "yeah."
She began to move and said, "This would be a bad thing?"
"God no, not bad at all. Kass," he gasped as he began to thrust again.
They did leave the bedroom to fix something to eat late in the afternoon, followed by two hours bathing some unhappy puppies. When they were done, they watched the sun set and let the dogs run around the yard. After dark, Nick talked her into jumping into the hot tub attached to the pool. They made love again and ran inside. Kassidy pulled towels out of the linen closet and found Nick in the living room with the TV on.
"Here," she said, tossing him a towel.
"Come here."
"Nick we should get dressed."
"Why?"
"Good point," she answered, dropping down by him.
"If you lived here we could run around like this all the time."
"Oh yeah, never mind that Lesley, Aaron and Angel are living here."
"Damn," he said as a smirk played on his lips.
"Let's just enjoy it while we can."
"Deal," agreed Nick, wrapping his arms around her.
The next day, Grace and AJ brought Lesley and the twins home. Grace and Kassidy went shopping.
"You still leaving tomorrow?"
"Yes. Why wouldn't I?"
"Let's see.gorgeous boyfriend whose crazy about you and whom you are crazy about."
"I know Grace. Its killing me," said Kassidy as she teard up.
"Kassi I'm sorry. Don't cry."
"No you're right. I am fully aware that I'm walking away when he needs me. But what can I do? My job is there. Am I suppose to just leave them in the lurch? Am I suppose to live off Nick? Then I'm everything his mother accused me of being."
"I know it's hard."
"I am so tired of it being hard. When do we get a break?"
"I don't know Kassi."
"I know you don't." After a minute she continued, "Thanks for listening to me whine."
"Sure. Like you do it all the time."
They finished shopping. Grace collected AJ and headed home. Kassidy and Nick were banished from the kitchen as his siblings prepared dinner.
"Dinner's ready," called Lesley from the dinning room.
"It looks wonderful," said Kassidy as she hugged each of them. "Thanks guys."
"It really does look good," agreed Nick.
"Can we eat? I'm starving," exclaimed Aaron.
"Sit and eat," directed Kassi.
Nick watched Kassidy with his brother and sisters. She had a way of drawing people in. He was going to miss her so much. Even though he wouldn't admit it to her, he was worried about dealing with his parents without her. He also knew he had to let her work through what she wanted to do about their living in two different places. He prayed she would work through it fast.
They helped with clean up, then gathered in the studio. They spent the night singing, laughing and talking. Kassidy marveled at how normal it felt. She thought about leaving the next day and felt tears stinging her eyes. She pushed the thought from her mind. She could cry tomorrow. Right now was about being happy and spending time with Nick and his family.
The next morning, Kassidy said good-bye to Angel, Aaron, and Lesley at the house. It would be hard enough for Nick to make it in and out of the airport without being mobbed. He had insisted on taking Kassidy, just like she knew he would, so she had booked the first flight out. The airport would not be as crowded.
"Baby don't cry," Nick soothed as he held her.
"I'm sorry."
"It's OK. I understand."
"I don't want to leave, but I have to go back."
"I know, but I'm already missing you."
"Me too."
The boarding call was given. They let everyone board while they held each other. The last call for boarding came. They could prolong the separation no longer. Kassidy pulled Nick down into a soft kiss. He wiped the tears from her cheeks. She then walked to the gate. She waved good-bye before disappearing. Nick watched the plane taxi out onto the runway.
Kassidy cried most of the flight home. She was torn. It took walking in the house for her to realize it was no longer home. Nick was her home. She called to let him know she arrived safely. She didn't even unpack. She curled up on her bed and cried herself to sleep.
The next day she went to work and made it through the day. Playing catch up from her vacation, but her heart wasn't in it. Michael called her in the evening.
"Hello?"
"Kassi."
"Hey Mike. How were the holidays?"
"Hectic, but good. How about you?"
"Same here. Mike I'm in love."
"Did you realize it before or after Christmas?"
"After why?"
"I won the bet!"
"What bet?"
"Lee bet me a night of babysitting that you would realize it as soon as you saw him. I said with the wedding and everything it would take you until after Christmas."
"I can't believe you two! On second thought."
"Yes you can," laughed Michael, but stopped short when she realized she was going to ruin her best friend's good mood. "Um Kassi have you been to the store today?"
"Nope. Why?"
"Are you going with Nick to the court hearing?"
"How do you know about the court hearing?"
"Two words. National Enquirer."
"Oh damn! Do you have it?"
"I hate to admit it but I do. Sorry it just shocked me so I bought it."
"Read it to me now!"
Jane Carter had struck again. She painted a picture that was far from the truth. She said Kassidy was after Nick for his money and saw the cash potential of hooking Aaron and Lesley. In Jane's fairytale, Kassidy was unable to conceive so she was trying to get an instant family with great earning potential. Of course Kassidy was more desperate since becoming a widow. Jane's poor son had fallen under this older woman's spell.
"That's all a lie."
"Kassi I know bullshit when I see it."
"I wonder why my phone has been quiet? She made sure they had my full name and where I live posted in the article. Michael I've got to call Nick. I have to warn him. I should have never left him."
"Kassidy you didn't know."
"But Michael."
"Kassidy just admit that you want to be with him."
"Well sure, state the obvious! Too bad reality doesn't work with that dream."
"Why not?"
"My job, house, life here."
"Did Nick ask you to stay?"
"Yes."
"Fine. You can find another job or convince them to let you do it from Florida or where ever you two land. The house can be sold. Your life should be with the man you love."
"That's why you are my bestest friend in da whole wide world. Always my voice of reason."
"Exactly! So what are you going to do?"
"Nick is already in LA for the hearing day after tomorrow."
"And?"
"I'm going to talk to Lawrence, then my butt is on the first plane to LA."
"What are you going to do when you get there," asked Michael.
"I'm going to make sure everything is ready for the hearing. Make love to the man I love. Finally, I'm going to put the fear of me into Jane Carter."
"That's my bestest friend in da whole wide world! Damn good to have you back."
"It's good to be back."
Chapter 47
Kassidy," exclaimed Lesley when she opened the front door.
"Hi Lesley," greeted Kassi as she hugged the girl.
"Hey Nick Kassi is here," yelled Angel as she ran to the entrance hall.
"Hi Angel. Where is Aaron?"
"Right here. Hi Kassidy."
"Hey."
"Kassidy what are you doing here," asked a stunned Nick.
"I can leave if you want," teased Kassidy, turning to leave.
"Get your cute ass in here," ordered Nick.
"Language around the kids," scolded Denise McLean with a smile.
Kassidy stopped short and said, "Denise what are you doing here?"
"Hey Kassi. I came to help," replied Denise hugging the younger woman.
"Good."
"Excuse me," said Nick, pouting.
Kassidy immediately walked over and gave him a big kiss, then said, "Hi baby."
Nick instantly softened and whispered, "hi baby."
"May I please get my cute rear in the house? I need to find out what is going on. Actually, I need to talk to Nick first."
Nick pulled her into the bedroom he was using. They were staying at Kristen and Kevin's place. They had never sold it after Kristen became a full-time mom and spent most of her time in Florida. They had decided to keep it for visits to the west coast and to get away.
Kassidy told Nick of her decision to be with him. She had talked to Lawrence at work that morning. He wanted to continue using her for web design and she could do that from anywhere.
He had the Enquirer story brought to his attention by an over eager new employee hoping to parlay it into Kassidy's job. The employee was made aware of their overestimation of trouble the story would cause Kassidy. Everyone who really knew Kassidy knew the story was bogus. Her boss told her to get on the first plane to LA.
It wasn't until 4 am that she received her first unwelcome call. She turned the ringer off. In the middle of her explanation to Nick, they were interrupted by the arrival of the attorney's along with AJ, Grace and AJ's cousin Kelly with take-out. As they ate, the attorneys talked strategy for the next day. It seemed while Lesley, Aaron, and Angel were staying with AJ and Grace they had talked with Denise and Kelly. After Kassidy had gone home, they all met with Nick and the attorneys. His parents were banking on the fact that with Nick always on the go he would appear unfit to look after the twins. They were also certain the judge would never agree to the emancipation.
While Denise and The Carters had been the best of friends when BSB was starting out, Jane had purposely distance herself from Denise once Nick broke away. She felt Denise supporting Nick was wrong and never forgave her. Denise was only there when Nick needed to talk. He still made all his decisions.
After talking to Aaron and Angel, Denise knew they were serious about breaking away from their parents. She also knew that no matter what they thought, they were not ready to take on the world and the business without help. Aaron had already been thinking the same thing. He needed new management, but didn't want to go with The Firm. When he talked to Denise it all fell into place. She had the knowledge, experience and connections to manage him. He and Angel could stay with her and see Nick anytime. Angel really wanted to attend regular school so she could stay with Kelly when Denise was on the road with Aaron.
"Of course, Kassidy if you decided to move in with Nick we can always stay in Tampa full time," finished Aaron.
"There is one problem with that thought Aaron. Your mom is dead set against it."
"Do you not want us," asked Angel.
"Angel of course I want you. It's just we have to make sure we have the strongest case when you go before the judge. This is one thing you are not going to get a second chance at if you lose. Can you guys leave Nick and I with the suits here? We need to get some things worked out."
Everyone went out for dessert. Kassidy laid out the plan she had come up with on the plane. Nick at first argued with her. However, the attorneys agreed it was the way to eliminate the view of her being a threat. Nick finally gave in.
After the suits, as Kassi kept calling the attorneys, left everyone settled in for the night. The next day was going to be a long. Of course, as Kassidy had told Michael, when she and Nick were in bed she made love to the man she loved.
The hearing the next day was done in the Judge's chambers. The press was kept outside the courthouse. The shocked look on Jane and Bob Carter's faces when Kassidy walked in at Nick's side was truly priceless.
The Judge called the proceedings to order. The attorneys presented both sides of the case. All the necessary people were questioned. Finally, Jane insisted that Kassidy be questioned. After being sworn in and getting all the preliminaries out of the way the real questioning started.
"Ms Rivers what is your relationship with Nick Carter," asked Jane and Bob's suit.
"As Nick said, we are in a relationship."
"You are living together?"
"Not at the moment."
"So you plan to in the future?"
"Yes."
"Near future?"
"Yes."
"Isn't that a nice little coincidence."
"Objection. That is not a question," countered Nick's attorney.
"Sustained," ordered the judge.
"Ms Rivers you expect us to believe your decision to move in with Mr. Carter has nothing to do with all the money you will have at your disposal?"
"You are the opposing counsel therefore I do not expect you to believe or rather to admit you believe it, but it is true. And I can prove it."
"How so Ms Rivers?"
"Judge what was just handed to your clerk is paperwork meant to be entered into the record," answered Nick's attorney.
"Please distribute them," directed the Judge and his clerk did as asked.
As they looked over the documents, Kassidy continued, "The first document is an agreement signed by me stating should the relationship with Nick end I will leave with what I walked into the relationship with, in particular, the money from the sale of my house. I will be investing it. I am gainfully employed and therefore do not need the money from the house to live on. If I do not use the money myself it will be distributed according to a will at the time of my death. The second document is also signed by me and states I will have no claim to any money obtained by either Lesley Carter, Aaron Carter, or Angel Carter."
"Well someone certainly thought this through," commented the Judge.
"Did the attorney's or Mr. Carter make you do this."
"No your honor. As a matter of fact the attorneys were irritated they hadn't thought of it and well Nick would never ask this of me. I want there to be no doubt about my motives. I love Nick and I want to be with him. I will love his bother and sisters like they were my siblings. I already do. They are great kids that are becoming great adults."
"So I see. What is the third document?"
"It's a legally binding agreement for everyone to sign regarding publicity from this point on. I'm not sure if you're aware of the article in the Enquirer. Actually, there have been three articles. The first dated back five years ago when Nick and I first tried to be together. The other two are recent and deal with this case."
The clerk handed the Judge copies of all three articles.
"Mrs. Carter did you participate in the writing of this articles?"
"I thought I was doing what was right."
"I will take that as a yes. I see in this document Ms Rivers, you propose the minors' side of the story be told."
"Yes but it will not include bad press for their parents. Basically, they should be allowed straighten this out. To say they felt this was the best decision."
"Yes and you want me to order the parents to agree to never speak of these proceedings again in a public forum."
"Yes sir."
"Aaron and Angel I've heard from you. I understand what your wishes are. I am inclined to grant your partitions for emancipation with some conditions. While I have no doubt your brother loves you, I feel you would be better served to stay with Ms McLean. You can visit your brother anytime you like. I also agree with the decision to have Ms McLean manage your career Aaron. I also recommend that Ms McLean's niece be allowed to provide a place for Angel to live when Ms. McLean is traveling with Aaron. I am also ordering the parents not be able to in anyway impede their children's careers and lives. Furthermore, I do here by order them to be removed from any position of authority regarding the business decisions of their children. Finally, Mr. and Mrs. Carter I recommend you seek counseling along with your children. If you want to rebuild your family, you are going to have to work through what your roles as parents and children are. That being said, I declare these proceedings adjourned. Thank you and good luck."
After signing all the documents, they left the Judge's chambers. Everyone was subdued, but Jane Carter. She was livid and she was going to have her say with Kassidy.
"You little bitch."
"Mom," exclaimed Nick.
Kassidy interrupted, "No Nick it's fine. Jane let's go somewhere more private."
"Let's."
They found an empty room. Kassidy shut the door on everyone and locked it. She turned to Jane.
"Alright Jane let loose."
"How dare you take my family! You think you will be here in 20 years? No. Nick will get tired of your soon enough and toss you aside for someone younger. Then you are out of luck. I will destroy you. I agreed to not talk about this, but not you. I will drag you through the mud. Why the hell are you smiling?"
Kassidy's tone was quiet and controlled. "Simple. You are sad and pathetic. If you cared about your family you wouldn't be using them as your meal ticket. Your moneymakers walked out the door, now you might have to get a real job. Oh Heavens! Now as far as dragging my name through the mud. You open your mouth, all bets are off. Not only will I sue your ass, but I will also tell the public what you're really like and how you treat your kids."
"You can't. You had the documents drawn up yourself."
"Funny, I forgot to mention the clause stuck in the middle of all that legalese. It says that if you talk about me or anyone connected with Nick, myself, or the McLean's, we are allowed to fully disclose the issues of this case. So you see either way you come out the villain. So go ahead. What we made sure of in there was you and Bob walk out of here with your dignity in tact. It's up to you as to whether you want to keep it in tact. I do recommend you take the judge's suggestion of counseling. Good-bye Jane."
Kassidy walked out of the room and out the courthouse with her family and friends.
Once in the car, Nick whispered against her ear, "put the fear of you in her."
"How do you know."
Nick cut her off, saying, "Michael called while you were in with mom. She said it. And for the record, thanks. I love you."
"I love you too. So you up to some packing?"
"I am if it gets you to me."
"It does."
"Then I'm ready."
"So are we," said Aaron. "What? We are in the back of a limo and it's quiet. Like we couldn't help but hear you."
"Kassidy do you know what you've gotten yourself into," teased Denise.
"Sure do. I'm smack dab in the middle of a family."
Chapter 48
"What the," asked Kassidy as she neared her house.
She said good-bye to Nick and his siblings at LAX hours before. They were heading back to Florida to get everyone settled into their new living spaces. Kassidy flew back to Nashville to begin work on moving her life to Florida. Now as she pulled into the drive photographers and others surrounded her.
"Ms Rivers how long have you been seeing Nick Carter," asked someone once she opened the car door.
"Are you married?"
"Are you trying to adopt Aaron and Angel Carter?"
And so it went, until she closed her front door. Dropping her bags, she attempted to calm her nerves. She should have known they would be waiting. A flash going off made her jump. They were in her backyard! Now she was pissed. She closed all the curtains in the house. Next she called her friend on the police force. He agreed to swing by. Legally, she could order them off her property. The phone ringing caused her to jump again.
"Hello."
"Hey baby what's wrong," asked Nick.
"I have company," she replied, surprised he could pick up on her emotions by the way she answered the phone.
"Huh?"
"The press is outside."
"Are you OK? They didn't hurt you did they?"
"No they didn't, but they are all over my property. I called a police buddy. He is coming to help get them off."
"I'm sending Billy to stay with you. I want to be there, but I have to take care of everything here."
"Yes you do. Don't send Billy yet. Really, I'm OK and I think I may have a solution."
She explained her idea to Nick. He agreed it was worth a try though he was skeptical. Kassidy hung up when a knock at the door proved to be her friend. She promised Nick she would call him back. She quickly explained her idea to her friend and they went outside. The cameras started going off and the reporters were yelling again.
"Will everyone please quiet down," started Kassidy without success.
"The Lady said shut up," barked her friend.
It worked and Kassidy said, "Thanks. Now, I fully appreciate that you have a job to do. However, I also have a life to live."
"Just answer our questions," yelled one of the reporters.
Kassidy leveled her gaze at him and said, "I'm speaking now. You will have to wait your turn. At this point, I have no comment and will not answer questions." This was met with much grumbling and fussing. "I know you don't like it, but sorry. I decide when and what I'm going to say and to whom I say it. However, I'm not naïve enough to believe you are all going to just pack up and go home. I think the reporters should because after this you aren't getting anymore sound bites from me. The photographers I can't stop. You don't need my cooperation to take my picture. The only way I can prevent it is to go into hiding and I hid for no one. Having said that I do ask for your cooperation on some conditions. First, as is my right, I can ask you to stay off my property and I'm asking it of you now. Secondly, please stay off the property of my neighbors. They didn't ask for any of this. Thirdly, please do not harass people who know me. I can't stop them from talking to you, but if they refuse, let it go. Also don't come into the building I work in or the church I attend and disrupt things. Finally, while I will not tell you where I'm going when I leave the house, should you choose to follow me I will not try to loose you. If you follow me,please be aware of everyone's safety. I don't want an innocent bystander or even you guys hurt. So can we have a gentleman's agreement?"
"No way," shouted the same obnoxious guy.
"Shut up Roger," said another man. "Ms Rivers we will play by your rules as long as you do."
"Thank you, all of you. This wonderful officer will help you get set up where you are safe and not on anyone's property."
Kassidy turned and went inside. She prayed they would do as she asked. She started to call Nick but was interrupted by another knock on the door. This time it was her neighbor.
"Hi Mrs. Dooley. Please come in."
"Thank you dear."
After closing the door, Kassidy said, "I'm so sorry there is all this mess going on. I don't know how I will ever make it up to everyone in the neighborhood."
"Oh honey most of us know you didn't mean for the this to happen. Those who do have a problem are being stupid and can just go fly a kite."
"Actually, those having a problem with it won't have worry much longer."
"Why?"
"I am going to move to Florida soon and put the house on the market."
"Kassidy don't let them push you out of your house."
"I'm not Mrs. Dooley. You remember Nick Carter? You met him at the wedding and again at the funeral."
"How could I forget such a looker! Seems to me your friend Michael mentioned you two once were an item, but it didn't work out."
"Yes. That was before Kevin. Anyway, Nick and I spent time together over the holidays. I made my decision, before I left for LA. My decision is based on the fact that I love Nick and want to spend the rest of my life with him not this crap outside."
"Well good. I'm glad to see you happy again. We miss Kevin and always thought the world of both of you."
"Thank you. Mrs. Dooley I hate to do this, but I have to ask you to not say anything to anyone about me moving."
"Heaven's no, not even Mr. Dooley. I love my husband, but sometimes his mouth gets away from him," laughed the older woman. "I hate to ask this Kassidy, but my granddaughters love the Backstreet Boys. When things settle down do you think you get something signed for them."
"I will do my best. Thank you so much Mrs. Dooley."
"Goodness I almost forgot why I came by," said the older women, pulling things out of her bag. "Here is your mail. I started having the postman bring it to me the day after you left."
"Thanks, but you didn't have to do it."
"Yes I did. I was livid when I saw that one fella going through your mail."
"Who went through my mail?"
"The one I think they call Roger. He got here the morning after you left. He waited until the mailman was out off sight and opened your mailbox. I caught him. Luckily you only had junk that day. I took it from him and scolded him. The next day I told the mailman to leave your stuff with me."
"Mrs. Dooley I owe you one."
"Don't mention it. Well I guess I should get back over to the house. Come see us before you leave."
"I will."
Kassidy hugged the older woman and walked her to the door. The photographers started snapping pictures. Mrs. Dooley got a kick out posing for them. She knew they didn't want pictures of her, but so what.
Kassidy called Nick. She convinced him not to come right away. He needed to talk to the guys and management. They needed to figure out how to deal with the situation. Also, him showing up would only intensify the scrutiny.
After saying good-bye to Nick, she called her boss and pastor to warn them about possible visitors. Ian said there had been a reporter by the church the day before. Lawrence said security was keeping reporters and photographers out of the building.
Finally, she called a church member who was a realtor. She had been to the house and knew the layout and understood discretion was needed. She had handled the buying and selling of property for several country music stars in the area. She would do everything short of putting the "For Sale" sign up in the yard. It would go up the day Kassidy left.
After all that was done, Kassidy started laundry and set about cleaning the house. From the attic, she retrieved all the boxes she saved when moving in. Kevin had fussed about keeping them. Now she was glad she'd held her ground. She could start packing up and the media vultures outside would be none the wiser.
She made a list of all the supplies she needed and went to the store. All the photographers followed her. They wanted to see if she kept her word. Plus they were curious about this woman. It wasn't until she got home from her errands that she thought to check her voicemail. She had calls from Lee and Michael. She conference called them. She declined their offers to help pack, explaining she didn't want to tip off the guys outside. Also once they showed up they would be fair game to the media.
Kassidy was asleep almost the second that her head hit the pillow. The last few days had drained her. She could sleep securely knowing where her life was going. It might not be all figured out, but the most important part was. She was going to be with Nick.
