"She hasn't left the room," asked AJ.
"Nope."
"Have you talked?"
"Nope."
"OK Nick don't go mute on me too."
"Sorry. I take her food and she eats a little, otherwise nothing."
"Man, she is one stubborn woman."
"You said it."
"Well I'm going up there."
"Good luck," said Nick.
AJ walked up the steps. Hesitating a moment, he walked in the room. Kassidy looked up from her laptop startled by his entrance. She quickly recovered and went back to work.
"Hello Kassi. Nick says you've shut yourself up in this room since you got here." He paused. "Not talking huh. Okie Dokie. I can talk enough for both of us. Have you looked at Nick since you got here? Did you notice Candace isn't here?"
Her head shot up.
"Ah I see you haven't. Well Candace is gone."
"Wait Nick said she was fine with this."
"She is. She encouraged him to come get you."
"She shouldn't have. Why did she leave?"
"Because she knew Nicky didn't love her and she didn't love him. She moved out before he got back. They are both fine with it."
"OK."
"Now we've taken care of the Candace question. It's time for the Nick question."
"What am I suppose to see?"
"He's whipped. He should be rested by now. He's been off the road for over a week and he's still exhausted."
"And?"
"Damn it Kassidy, he's exhausted because he's worried about you. Shit you're worrying everyone. Did you look at Lee or Michael the last time you saw them? I know from talking to them on the phone that they are worn out too and worried. And when was the last time you talked to Grace?"
"When was the last time you talked to Grace?"
"Huh."
"I talked to Grace last night. She told me she hadn't heard from you since she left the tour."
"It was her choice to go. I didn't ask her to leave. I still don't know why she left."
"AJ take your own advice."
"What's that suppose to mean?"
"It means," said Kassidy, as she grabbed a tape off her nightstand and tossed it to him. "When are you going to wake up to what is right in front of your face?"
"What is this?"
"It's a tape I want you to listen to. After Mr. Smug come back and we will talk. For now, get out!"
"Kassidy."
"Get OUT!"
AJ did as she asked. He went downstairs and relayed the conversation to Nick. He asked Nick what was on the tape. Nick didn't know, but thought he should listen to it. AJ told him to hang tough as he left.
Nick sat on the couch for a moment. The more he thought about things the madder he got. Finally, he bounded up the steps two at a time. He walked in Kassidy's room, picked her up and didn't stop until they were out by his pool. He dropped her in the water.
"What did you do that for," yelled Kassidy when she surfaced.
"To wake you up!"
"I am awake thank you very much. Now stop being a dumbass and help me out."
"You're the dumbass and a selfish one to boot!"
"What's that suppose to mean?"
"It means, you have all these people who love you. You are putting all of us through hell. You think you are the only one who lost Kevin? You aren't! You think you are only hurting yourself by acting this way. Wrong! It hurts us to watch you slip away. You are stronger than this."
"No I'm not," she yelled.
Nick jumped in the pool and walked toward her. "Yes you are Kassidy. Your strength is one of the things Kevin loved most about you."
"How do you know," asked Kassidy, her tone still biting.
"He told me once. I had called, but you were out doing something for a friend at church. The woman's husband was dying and you stayed with him while she got some rest. Kevin said it had brought up so many painful memories of your parents, but still you kept going. He admired that in you. So do I."
He watched the battle being waged behind her eyes. Finally, her lip began to tremble and a tear escaped her eye. Nick started to pull her into his arms. She shoved him away.
"Kassidy!"
"No Nick. Don't get close. I want everyone to go away. Bad things happened to the people I care about."
"Kassi what are you saying?"
"People die around me. If I care about them and let them in, they die."
Nick took her by the shoulders and said, "Kassidy look at me."
"No."
"Kass look at me."
Kassidy looked into his blue eyes. AJ was right Nick was exhausted. He was still gorgeous, but very tired.
"Kass you care about so many people. Most of us are still alive and not going anywhere. I know it hurts. But baby you've got to let some of it out or it will swallow you. And I know Kevin wouldn't want you do this to yourself. You know I'm right."
"It just hurts. I'm so scared."
"Its OK I'm here."
That was all Kassidy needed to hear. He watched as her face crumbled. Her first breath in was a sob quickly followed by more sobbing. Nick held her as they stood in the pool. They didn't move until she began to shiver and hiccup.
"Oh great! (hiccup) I cried so hard (hiccup) I've got the (hiccup)."
"I hear them," laughed Nick. "You are also freezing. Let's get out of here."
"Yeah you don't make a (hiccup) a good prune," joked Kassidy.
They ran into the house. Nick pulled her into her bathroom. He went to get dried off while she took a hot shower. The tears were falling again, but this time she didn't try to stop them. She was surprised to find Nick holding a towel when she stepped out of the shower. She shyly stepped into his arms. He dried her, never acknowledging how thin she was. She dressed and they went down to the kitchen. The hiccups were gone and Kassidy was hungry for the first time since Kevin had died. She rummaged around in
Nick's cupboards and refrigerator, put him to work making sandwiches while she made a salad. They carried everything outside. Nick watched as Kassidy turned her face to the sun. After a minute, he saw tears sliding down her cheeks.
"Kassi?"
She looked at him and said, "It's OK. Kevin always wanted to come down here, but we never took the time. He loved being outside. He worked in the yard all the time. He loved the water. You two were alike in that respect. He would have loved your boat."
"I wish you guys had come down. We would have gone out on the boat. I know I didn't like Kevin at first, because. well you know why. But after I got to know him I really liked him."
"He liked you too. Um Nick. why didn't you tell me about Candace?"
"Yeah like we've been talking bunches since I got you here."
"I can't believe I was so wrapped up in me that I didn't realize she wasn't here. I just thought she was too scared to come near me. I was pretty hateful."
"Yeah you were, but that's changed now. The pain had to come out some way. Now it's coming out in a better way," he finished as he leaned over and wiped a tear off her cheek.
"AJ said you two realized you didn't really love each other. I'm sorry it didn't work out."
"Well we love each other, but not in the way to be together forever. I know that sounds stupid."
"No it doesn't. And stop saying you're stupid."
"Hey you called me a dumbass earlier."
"I know, but like you said I was the dumbass. Man I've got so much to do. I have to call and apologize to everyone. Starting with you. I'm really sorry for how I've acted. I need to check on Jessie and the house,
call work and church to let them know I'm back so to speak. I have to call the lawyer about the estate," Kassi rambled as she started to get up.
Nick's hand on her arm stopped her. "Kass you can do that tomorrow. Today just be still and relax. Give yourself at least twelve hours of healing before you start attacking the world again."
"Do I attack the world?"
"Well you attack life and I'm glad you are finally doing it again, but you don't have to do it today."
"All right," she said. On impulse she leaned over and kissed his cheek.
"What was that for," asked Nick with a smile.
"For being my friend and being brave enough to come get me."
"Anytime Kass."
Chapter 35
Kassidy hit the ground running the next day. She called work, church and the lawyer. She checked on her house, Jessie, and the Wadkins. She conference called Lee and Michael. They spent an hour crying and laughing. Nick watched her. They had both gotten a goodnight's sleep and looked better. After Kassi finished her calls she convinced him to call Brian and get his stuff. He had not left her alone since they had arrived.
Kassi was doing some work, when the doorbell rang. She found AJ on the front porch. She pulled him inside and hugged him. She apologized for being such a pain. He was just happy she looked and felt better. Kassidy looked at him and realized he didn't look better. She made him sit down on the couch and got them some ice tea.
Handing him a glass she said, "So what's wrong."
"What makes you think something's wrong," he hedged taking a long drink of tea.
"Alex."
"That tape you gave me yesterday."
"Tape? Oh yeah. What about it," she asked.
"You said I couldn't see what was in front of my of my face? Did you mean Grace?"
"AJ did you listen to the tape?"
"Yeah."
"Then you tell me. Better yet. Do you have the tape with you," asked Kassidy.
She laughed as she watched him fish around in the pocket of the pants he had on. They were at least three sizes too big. Finally, he produced the tape. She took it and popped it into the mini-stereo system Nick had in the room. They listened as Grace's voice filled the room. Neither moved until the final chorus died away.
So give me one, one reason why.
One place and time when you thought things just weren't feeling all right.
I'll give you thousands of good reasons why, places and times,
when you put your hand upon your heart and said it was mine,
I really believed that it was mine.
As the song ended, Kassidy whispered, "Right in front of your face."
"Yeah," said AJ. "Damn."
"Now AJ I need to you to listen to me. I need you to concentrate."
AJ swatted at her hand on his arm and said, "Oh shut up! I'm listening."
"So the light's finally dawned. You finally realize that Grace loves you. I'm asking you to take some time. Don't jump into something with her unless you're damn sure you are in it for the long haul. You yank that child and I will yank you. And Bone.I yank harder."
"I know. There is no way I can make you understand at this moment that I'm serious and in it for the long haul, but I am. I've been thinking about this all night. I burned the song onto a CD last night and put it on
repeat. First I was scared. I mean, she thinks that about me! Then I grabbed the tape of the other song she wrote. I finally realized that song was about me too. I think about how I told her the guy was an idiot
for not realizing how wonderful she was. Well I was right. He is a complete idiot. I pulled out some of the videos Train had given me from the last tour. I swear him and that video camera. I watched her in them. When she said she was leaving, I stayed mad at her so I wouldn't have to miss her. God she must hate me now!"
"Hate you? No, but you did hurt her. I won't lie to you AJ. You've hurt her often over the years, but she valued you're friendship. So Romeo, you've figured out you have the big "L" for her. Right?"
"Yeah I do."
"What are you going to do about it?"
He didn't answer her, but she found out soon enough. He pulled his cell out and dialed his Mom. He asked her to book him on a flight to Springfield and a rental car. She called back with in 30 minutes with his flight arrangements. The first available flight was at 8:10 the next morning, if he flew out of Tampa. Otherwise, the first flight out of Orlando was at 7pm the following night. He chose the Tampa flight.
As he hung up, Kassidy said, "Guess Nick has another guest."
"Um, yeah," replied AJ with a sheepish grin. "Nicky won't care."
"So are you going to warn Grace you are coming?"
"I don't know. What do you think?"
"If you call she will tell you not to come."
"Then I'm not calling. So what are we going to do now?"
"We are going to the grocery store. Its about time I earned my keep around here."
Kassidy left a note for Nick and they headed out in AJ's car. AJ was spotted a few times in the store, but only had to sign two autographs. Kassidy got the fixings for Lasagna. They picked up a bottle of wine
and some flowers on the way home.
Nick was in the shower when they returned. He stepped out of the bedroom and immediately smelled the hamburger cooking. He followed his nose into the kitchen. He laughed when he saw AJ sitting at the table chopping onions. He's eyes were watering and he was sniffling.
"Ya know Bone this is one of the few time when wearing the sunglasses in doors would have been a handy thing."
"Why?"
"You wouldn't be crying so much."
"Oh man! Kassi why didn't you tell me?"
"Hmm," said Kassidy, playing innocent.
"I see how ya are," replied AJ.
"You're point?"
"Nothing."
"Thought so?"
"Nick, I can tell you got all your stuff from Brian and Leigh's."
"How?"
Kassidy walked over to the utility room and attempted to open the door. The key word was 'try'; she could barely budge it. The guys laughed and Nick walked over to help her. Once the door was open, she pushed him inside and told him he couldn't come out until it was all sorted with one load started. He came out a couple of time to ask about what to do with a particular piece of clothing. While Kassi put the lasagna together, AJ told Nick about his Ah Ha moment and asked if he could stay there for the night. Just like he said, Nicky didn't care.
"OK it's warm in here," declared Kasei.
"Let's go for a swim," suggested Nick.
"Can I borrow some trunks," asked AJ.
"Sure. Come on."
They all went up stairs. Kassi poked around in her suitcase and pulled out a bikini with a note attached.
Kassidy, we figured if you were looking for swimwear you were in a better mood and out of whatever room you had locked yourself in. Michael got this for you. It's in your regular size, but is a string bikini so you can adjust the size since you've lost some weight.
If you aren't comfortable with wearing this yet, look in the pocket of the suitcase. There is another one that is a size smaller and less flirty...Love, Lee & Michael
Kassidy held up the bright, floral print bikini. Reaching into the pocket of the suitcase she pulled out a one piece. She put the bikini away and slipped on the other bathing suit. It was slightly loose but would do.
By the time she was dressed, Nick and AJ were out in the pool. She watched them dunking each other. Smiling at their silliness, she thought of Kevin. She missed him so much. He had always just been there, even before they were married. It still hit her hard when she realized he wasn't there and never would be.
"Earth to Kassidy," called AJ.
"I'm coming," she said as she stepped outside.
She would think about the future tomorrow. After all it wasn't going anywhere. Right now she had good friends to spend time with.
Chapter 36
AJ breathed a sigh of relief when he pulled up in front of Grace's house. He had been forced to stop twice for directions. Next time Kassidy wrote directions for him, he wouldn't forget them!
Walking up to the front door he buttoned up the shirt he had borrowed from Nick. He knocked on the door. After a moment, it opened.
"AJ what are you doing here?"
"Hi Pooh. Good to see you too," he attempted humor. She shut the door. "Pooh open the door. Please! I came to apologize."
"I'm listening," said Grace through the closed door.
"I'm sorry I haven't called you. I'm sorry I let you leave without talking. Most of all I'm sorry it took me so long to figure out you loved me."
The door swung open and Grace exclaimed, "What did you say?"
"Pooh, Kassidy helped me figure it out."
"She had no right."
"Well I had a right to know."
"Why? What would it change? How's the dancer?"
"I don't know how she is. And if I had known I might have realized earlier that I."
Grace interrupted, "That you what? Didn't want me around? Could make fun of me?"
"No! That I loved you too."
"Don't say that!"
"But it's true."
"No it's not! You are just playing and I can't handle it anymore! Go away! I hate you and I don't ever want to see you again!"
"No you don't hate me and damn it I love you!"
Grace tried to shut the door but AJ stopped her. He pulled her into a gentle kiss. She fought him, but he didn't let go. Finally she stopped fighting. He pulled his lips away and she was surprised to see tears in his eyes.
"I love you Grace. The dancer was just someone to hang out with. I didn't even sleep with her."
"You didn't?"
"Nope. I didn't want to. I was just upset when you left the way you did. I didn't know why. Now I do and I will spend every day of the rest of my life making up for all the crap. Not just "the dancer", but for never realizing
what was in front of me."
"What's that?"
"This incredible girl that I watched become an incredible woman. I learn so much just by being around you. You are beautiful, sweet, smart, and kind. Add to that sexy as all get out and you've got one hell of a great combination."
"AJ stop."
"God I love making you blush. Actually, I just want to make you happy. Will you let me Grace?"
Grace stared into his eyes while replying. "Yes AJ I will let you."
"That's my Pooh," exclaimed AJ before kissing her again. "Love ya Pooh."
"Love ya Alex."
They went inside the house. AJ had promised to call Kassidy when he got there and let her know how things were going. Grace laughed, because she finally understood why Kassi was so nervous talking to her that
morning. She had thought Grace was calling to yell at her for giving AJ the tape.
After a quick run to McDonalds for lunch, they settled into the living room to talk.
"AJ I need to tell you about a decision I've made. Only Brian knows about this, because I asked his advice."
"Shoot it at me baby."
"I've decided to not attend medical school."
"Wow."
"Yeah. Let me finish. Brian got me to thinking when we talked before I left. I started thinking about how I could do both music and medicine. Remember you guys did the benefit for the Nordoff -Robbins Music Therapy Trust?"
"Yeah."
"Well Kassidy was telling me about their program. She did a research paper in college on music therapy. Did you know music reaches people with autism and Alzheimer's when nothing else will?"
"I know we visited the Nordoff-Robbins school before the benefit. It's amazing the things they've accomplished."
"I know and it also helps patients in pain management. I read Kassi's research paper. There are so many possibilities."
"So you're telling me you want to do music therapy?"
"Yeah I am."
"I think it's perfect for you. So what needs to be done?"
"I need to find a school and get accepted. It means another 2-4 years of school, depending on how many of my credits from pre-med will count toward this degree."
"I will help anyway I can Pooh."
"Can you tell mom and dad for me," she asked with a rueful laugh.
"No, but I can be there when you tell them."
"Guess that means I need to tell them before you leave."
"I think so Pooh," said AJ. He looked into Grace's blue eyes then down at her mouth. He leaned in, but stopped.
Grace didn't wait for him. She closed the distance between their lips. AJ allowed her to kiss him. He had always been the initiator, but this time Grace was in control. She slowly pressed her lips against his. The kiss ended and she began another one. She captured his bottom lip and he felt the tip of her tongue before she pulled back tugging. When the kiss was broken he growled and kissed her. His tongue exploring her mouth. His arms wrapped around her waist and hers found the back of his neck. The phone ringing interrupted.
"Hello? Mom! Hi! Do I sound out of breath? Um. why did you call? No I don't need anything from the store. OK I see later. Bye."
"Why didn't you tell her I was here?"
"I can hear it now. Grace you are out of breath and that Boner person is there!"
"Well she's going to see me when she gets home."
"That's later."
"When did my innocent Pooh become so sneaky?"
"Your Pooh has always been on a need to know basis with her parents."
"I see. So where were we," asked AJ pulling her back to him.
Grace giggled and said, "We were on hold. Come on."
AJ allowed her to drag him into the family room. Grace went online. She began looking for schools that offered degrees in music therapy. She found out, both Florida State University and the University of Miami offered
programs. She also found the Florida Association for Music Therapy. She called both schools and they agreed to send her packets of information. The more she researched the more excited she became.
Her mom arrived home and was surprised to find AJ, but quickly recovered. However, when she went to change out of her nurse's uniform she called her ex-husband. By the time they finished dinner he was there.
"Gee what brings you over dad," asked Grace.
"I'm not going to be polite about this. Mr. McLean why are you here?"
"Dr. Johnson I came to see your daughter."
"Why?"
"Because I had to tell her I loved her."
"You what," exclaimed both of Grace's parents.
"I love her."
"I can not believe this. Grace," asked her father.
"What?"
"What do you have to say," asked her mother.
AJ reached for Grace's hand and she said, "I love him."
"Oh my God," exclaimed her mother.
"Since this news is going over so well I guess I will tell you everything."
"Young lady I guess you better," responded her mother.
"I have decided about medical school."
"You're going," said her father.
"No dad I'm not."
"This is all your fault. You had to come in and turn her head. What happens when you are through playing with our daughter," bellowed her father.
"I am not playing with your daughter. How long have I known her? Have I ever played with her? No. If I were going to play with her I would have done it a long time ago. I have never interfered with Grace's education."
"Well you are now," retorted Dr. Johnson.
"Will you all just shut up," yelled Grace. "AJ is not doing anything except love me. Further more, if you would sit down and listen I could explain what I am doing."
Her parents were stunned at her tone, but did what she asked. She told them about Music Therapy. Her father's first response was 'I'm not paying for it. AJ said he would. Grace told them she would. After two more hours of discussion her father left and they all went to bed.
Grace agreed to go back with AJ and spend the rest of the summer in Florida. It would give her a chance to check out FSU and Miami. Grace and AJ spent a few days in Springfield getting her stuff packed up and also hanging out. She received the packets from the schools the following week and they headed to Florida in Grace's car.
