How We Met

To be honest, I’m not sure what it was that first attracted me to Jamie. It wasn’t her looks, or the way she talked, or any of the things you normally hear about when two people meet for the first time. Instead, I think it was how she interviewed.

That’s right. Interviewed. I actually liked the way she answered her questions on an online matchmaking service.

Now, before you laugh, think about it. Since I started going to college, I’d been going to clubs, trying to meet women. I mean, why else do guys go? Not to drink...we can do that at home a lot cheaper, in comfortable clothes, without having to breath smoke. Guys go to clubs to pick up women. End of story.

If that doesn’t work, what do you do? After a couple of complete dating disasters, I was ready to try ANYTHING else. So, I went surfing.

There’s a service called Houston Matchmaker. It’s like a lot of others on the web; in some ways easier to use. After you’ve registered, you answer these questions that will help match you with others who are similar. Then, and this is the pain-in-the-butt part, you have to answer all of these essay questions. The more you answer, the better an idea a person gets of you. And of course, you can include your picture.

Well, one night I was on there, letting the computer match me up with possible profiles, when for fun I decided to include matches with profiles that did not include pictures. Then, I was as strict as possible with my parameters. It brought back a lot of matches, but not too many to go through. So, I went through them.

To make a long story short, I only emailed a few, and Jamie’s was the only profile that did not have a picture.

Well, she answered me back (I did have a picture there...I guess she couldn’t help herself) and we emailed each other back and forth for about 2 weeks. I finally decided to take a chance and give her my number. She called; we talked for about another week, and decided that we should meet.

So, one evening after work I changed into jeans and boots and drove to the Blockbuster in Seabrook, Texas where we were supposed to meet. I was understandably tense; she had emailed me a picture, but who knew if it was really her.

She drove up, got out of the car, and I remember thinking, “Thank God, the picture was for real.” We went out to a club, drank a little, danced a little, and though I can’t say I knew this was the one, I knew there was something special about her, and I wanted to see her again.

And that was the beginning...........................
