"CECIL RAYMOND CLIFTON was born 20 Apr 1917 in LaWard, Jackson County, Texas; died 1 Mar 1977 in Houston, Texas.CECIL attended Alexander Hamilton Junior High School in Houston, Texas. He enlisted into the navy and first served on the USS Indianapolis, a battle wagon, as it was called. Then he transferred to the USS Nashville, a light cruiser. Cecil had become Chief Petty Officer just prior to World War II. The Nashville served in the South Pacific and it had just left Pearl Harbor before the Japanese bombed Hawaii on 7 Dec 1941. The Nashville was the flag ship used by General Douglas McArthur upon his return to the Philippine Islands. The Nashville survived until the battle of Leyte, when a suicide plane hit the deck killing all on top deck including marines, who were about to disembark for shore. Cecil survived because his duty was in the engine room below deck. He was then transferred to the USS Beatty and served on this ship until his retirement from the navy."4Texas Department of Health, State Vital Statistics Unit, TX Death Certificates1903-1982, certificate 18417.
