BROADSIDE AND SANDSTORM BROADSIDE AND SANDSTORM

These two Autobots were the last triple-changers to join the ranks of the Autobots, but their stories are very different.

BROADSIDE

Broadside may have made his first appearance during the Quintesson attack on Cybertron (Ref: "Five Faces of Darkness"). The escape craft used by the Autobots at this time was identical to Broadside's jet mode, and it may have been Broadside himself, or simply a ship modelled after him. The latter option would appear to be the most likely, as the ship in question was torn apart by meteors.
Broadside transforms into the likeness of an Earthen fighter jet, and from there into an aircraft carrier. It is unfortunate, therefore, that he is afraid of heights, and gets seasick and rusty! Due to these inhibitions, Broadside has come to loathe his Earthen modes, and the whole planet in general. He's self-conscious, and tries to look after his bodywork.
After the Quintessons were repelled, Broadside and Seaspray tracked down the Decepticon city of Trypticon (Ref: "Thief in the Night"). Then, Broadside's robot mode was completely remodelled for no apparent reason, making him considerably taller, though not affecting his transformation in any way (Note: Broadside was redesigned by the animators to more closely resemble his toy design). Broadside was something of a minor character, and not given much time for character-development. His final fate following the restoration of Cybertron's Golden Age is unknown.

SANDSTORM

During the Fourth Great Cybertronian war, a small group of Autobots fled the planet, seeking peace on other worlds. Their craft flew into an inter-spatial vortex, and were carried to a far corner of some uncharted galaxy, where they landed on a planet they named Paradron and built a city there. It was years later, when the Decepticons Cyclonus and Scourge, seeking escape from the Aerialbots, fled through the same vortex, and crashed down on Paradon. Discovering the planet was rich in Energon, they quickly overpowered the weak, peace-loving inhabitants of the planet, and contacted Galvatron, who brought the entire Decepticon army to Paradron, and asserted control of the planet. Sandstorm, the only Paradronian who realised that Cyclonus and Scourge were bad news from the beginning, escaped, and enlisted the Autobots help. In the end, the Autobots evacuated the Paradronians, and were forced to destroy the planet's Energon core. Sandstorm remained with the Autobots.
Sandstorm transforms into the likeness of an Earthen dune buggy, and from there to a helicopter, although considering he had never been to Earth, why he should have Earthen modes on Paradron is something of a mystery. Sandstorm is a level-headed individual, but he has a habit of always giving individuals the benefit of the doubt, even though it's clear they're nothing but trouble.
When the Decepticon, Octane came to the Autobots, seeking sanctity, after being exiled from the Decepticons for his theft of Trypticon, Sandstorm gave him refuge. However, the outcome of this was that Octane inadvertantly managed to free the indestructable spark of Starscream from his remains. Starscream's Ghost attempted to assassinate Galvatron by possessing Cyclonus and Scourge, but was eventually dealt with.
Sandstorm was also something of a more minor character, and was never seen much. His fate following Cybertron's restoration is unknown.
