The origins of Vector Sigma are shrouded in mystery. The spherical supercomputer, located at the heart of Cybertron, is the computer which programmed each and every Transformer with their mind and personality. It would therefore seem to make sense that it was built by theQuintessons, the five-faced aliens who built the first Transformers, but, when activated, Vector Sigma would say: "I am Vector Sigma. Before Cybertron was, I was!", which would seem to indicate he had been created before the Quintessons ever built Cybertron. Of course, new evidence uncovered by the Maximal commander, Optimus Primal, seems to indicate that the Quintessons did not build Cybertron at all, but rather modified an organic world into what is now know as Cybertron. The truth remains to be revealed.
Vector Sigma first appeared when Megatron rebuilt five Earth vehicles into Decepticons, termed the Stunticons. However, they had no minds, and could only be controlled by remote, so Megatron took them to Cybertron via the Decepticon spacebridge, in an effort to have Vector Sigma programme them. He successfully stole the powerful Key to Vector Sigma, and used it to activate the supercomputer, which was programmed to obey the holder of the Key, and subsequently gave the Stunticons life. The Stunticons and Decepticons returned to Earth to wreak havoc, while the Autobots were left with no means to combat the mighty Stunticons, until Optimus Prime his upon an idea. He and the other Autobots reconstructed five Cybertronian spacecraft to resemble Earthen aircraft. However, Megatron still had the Key, and without it, they could not activate Vector Sigma and give life to the newly built Aerialbots. Their guide, and Prime's creator, the famed Cybertronian machinesmith, Alpha Trion merged his circuits with Vector Sigma, activating the computer and allowing the Aerialbots to live. The Autobots returned to Earth, only to discover that the Key to Vector Sigma had gained new powers upon interacting with Earth's ecosystem - it was now capable of transforming organic matter into technomatter, and Megatron was putting that power to good use as his conquest of the planet began. However, after the Aerialbots gestalt form of Superion clashed with and defeat the Stunticon gestalt, Menasor, the Aerialbot leader, Silverbolt, destroyed the Key.
In 2007, the newly-resurrected Optimus Prime (having died at the hands of Megatron in 2005, and been rebuilt by a rogue Quintessons in 2006) began to suffer from premonitions after opening the Matrix to destroy the Hate Plague. In desperation to discover what they meant, Optimus used the Matrix to activate Vector Sigma and spoke with Alpha Trion, who continued to exist within the computer. Optimus's mind was soon set to rest, as the Plasma Energy Chamber overloaded and blew Galvatron and his forces across the galaxy.
Centuries later, Vector Sigma was still active, functioning as the core of the mystical computer known as the Oracle. The Oracle was in the process of guiding Maximal commander Optimus Primal and his team to creating a balance of techno-organic life on Cybertron, but his enemy, Megatron (not the original, but his descendant), was determined to purge all organic life from the planet. Megatron's three generals, Tankorr, Jestorm and Thrust engaged the Maximals in battle numerous times, but on one occasion, the Maximals discovered that Tankorr's superstructure actually contained the tainted spark of their former teammate, Rhinox. They were successful in restoring Rhinox's mind, but were shocked to discover that he believed in Megatron's dream of a technologically pure Cybertron. However, he believed that HE was the one who should rule the planet. Reprogramming Megatron's Diagnostic Drone, he sent it into the Oracle, where it was able to hack into the core, unlock Vector Sigma, and download a copy of the Key to Vector Sigma. Thanks to changes instigated by the Maximals to Cybertron, the Key now had it's transmutation powers on the planet, and Tankorr put them to use, attacking the Maximals, and converting as much organic matter to technomatter as he could, before the Key apparently overloaded his systems and sent him offline. However, he was not dead, and went into hiding, continuing to plot, using the Diagnostic Drone to coerce Megatron into outfitting all the Vehicon tank drones with copies of the Key, in an attempt to purge the entire planet of organic life. The Drone also used Optimus Primal's connection with the Oracle to feed him false visions, forcing him to counter the energy from the Key with the power of the Plasma Energy Chamber, and the resultant meshing of energies accidentally resulted in Tankorr's destruction. Optimus's body was destroyed by the meshing of the energies, but his spark continued to exist thanks to his connection to the Oracle, and it's subsequent connection with the Matrix. When Optimus emerged from the Oracle, it vanished, apparently going off-line. However, this was not the case, as the Oracle actually transferred itself inside Optimus Primal. This was not discovered by Primal until sometime later, when Megatron tricked him into activating it. Megatron subsequently downloaded the Oracle's data, and used it to facilitate his plan for the sparks he had stolen. He began absorbing the sparks into himself, intent on making a single consciousness, but a sonic blast from Nightscream depolarised his spark, allowing it to roam free of his body. Rattrap managed to repolarise his spark, and trapped it within the weak body of the Diagnostic Drone. Megatron then transferred his spark into a newly-built body - a replica of the "Optimal Optimus" body Primal had used on prehistoric Earth. "Optimal Megatron" needed the portion of the Oracle that remained within Primal, as, indeed, Primal needed the portion of it that was within Megatron, to facilitate both their ultimate plans for Cybertron. Megatron and Primal engaged in a massive battle, which ended when the two tumbled down a shaft to the planet's organic core, where the Oracle triggered the reformattin of Cybertron into a techno-organic world.
It is unclear if the Oracle was destroyed in this process. It is within the realm of possibility that it was transferred to the new Maximal commander, Cheetor. It is unlikely that any more details will be soon revealed.
