Blue-throated Macaw

The Blue-throated Macaws

Though all parrots seem to be curious of their human caretakers, Blue-throated Macaws seem to be as entertained by us as we are of them. Outside of breeding season Bonnie and Clyde seem to see me as at least a pleasant diversion. As soon as I step into view the pair get as close as possible and “follow” me around their cage as long as I am there. Clyde is much more extroverted than his mate and loves to pull the food dishes out of my hand before I can secure them in his cage. Though this pair is far from tame though I have never been bitten. Clyde does like to pull my fingers away from his food bowls much like a parent opening the fist of a toddler clenching a penny. Clyde also takes perverse pleasure in dropping bits of sunflower seeds and other food on my head when I invade his “territory” to clean up. I have several close up pictures of Clyde because he also likes to try to pull the camera out of my hands by the lens. I sincerely hope that this endangered bird becomes firmly established to the point where everyone has a chance to enjoy these playful macaws.

Bonnie distracts me with a pose while Clyde (at the bottom of the frame) snatches the camera from my hands.

Note the differences in the Blue and Yellow and Blue-throated Macaws.
