"Antique Rose" by Carol Dacken (me!)

You live
Beside an abandoned house,
Having been carefully planted years ago
By someone’s loving grandmother.
Reverence gleamed in her eyes
As she settled you into
The warm, living earth.

Throughout the years,
She borrowed your buds
To brighten her table,
Always making sure that
She left you with a full, showy coat
To beckon the neighbors’
Complimentary eyes.
Children ran past you laughing;
One occasionally stopping
To bury a tiny nose in one
Of your fragrant blooms.

Without your brilliant foliage now,
You strive to produce
A flower or two,
While opposing the harshness
Of the Sun and wind,
Overcome by cheery weeds
Outside of an empty house.
