Chapter 24

“In the news today, the Backstreet Boys have been hit with another terrible accident in their circle of friends.   Brianna Lee Nelson, girlfriend of Alexander James McLean, otherwise known as AJ, was found dead in her Orlando apartment.  Sources say that the cause of death was found to be suicide.” The reporter spoke softly as images of the Coroner’s van pulled up in front of the apartment complex.  “Channel 9 News has not be told of any further details to this tragic event.  As soon as more information comes about, we will let you know.  This is Christine Johnson, Channel 9 Reporter.”

“Sir, I need you to come with me for questioning.  If you will follow me, please.” Said the investigator as he took AJ by the arm and escorted him to a police car.

“You can’t mean that you think AJ had something to do with this, do you?” Kevin inquired as he held Dee close to him.

“No sir, we are not arresting him or anything.  We would just like to take him in for questioning.  This was a very unfortunate incident, and the victim’s parents want answers.  You must understand, we have to get all the information possible.” The investigator answered.

“Well, if you take AJ in for questioning, you have to take ALL of us.  We were all together the last time we saw her, and we are just as upset about this as Brianna’s parents.”  Liz spoke up.

The entire group followed the officer to the station for questioning.   It was the longest ride that any of them had to endure.  AJ was completely in shock.

“Sir, will I be able to see her?   I mean, I know that she was taken…to…” he broke down, unable to keep him composure any longer.

“Mr. McLean, your girlfriend was in bad shape when we arrived.  I am not sure you will want to see her…umm, I don’t know how to put this, but…the bullet went through the roof of her mouth and out the backside of her head.  It was not something that you need to see.”

AJ nearly had a heart attack from the news that had hit him.  He had gotten to the phone as quickly as possible, only to hear Brianna crying and threatening to kill herself.

“AJ…my life is ruined…I ruined everything we had together…I can’t go on…I…just can’t!  I don’t know how Heather lived with herself after she did what she did…I mean…I killed our baby!!!  I don’t deserve to…”  AJ heard just before the gun went off.  The whole event played in his head over and over again until it made him crazy.

“How could you do this baby?  I just don’t understand.” He mumbled to himself as the car pulled into the parking lot of the police station.

“Look, I already told you.  We had a fight over something she had done.  I got angry and told her to leave, she agreed and that was that.” AJ repeated for the umpteenth time that night.

“Mr. McLean, you need to tell us what the fight was about…it may help clear up a few of the questions we have.” The investigator prodded.

“Look, she was pregnant…and she didn’t want children.  I said that everything would be fine, and that we would work it out.  But, she went behind my back…and she got an…I…” he stammered, trying not to break down, “…I…I can’t even say the word.”

“An abortion?” the investigator questioned eagerly.

“Yes…she killed our baby!  I got upset and told her to go!  That I couldn’t live the rest of my life with someone who would do such a thing.  And, once she left, that was the last time I had seen her.  That was about a week ago.” He finished, getting up slowly to walk around.

“Thank you, Mr. McLean.  Trust us, there are not any charges being brought up against you.  This very unfortunate accident could not have been prevented.  You had no idea what condition Ms. Nelson was in, so, you are free to go.  If you need anything, just give me a call, here is my card.” The investigator finished and then opened the interrogation room door.

AJ stepped out into the hallway where all of his friends were sitting, bleary eyed and upset.  It had been a long and terrible night for them…and now…the worst was yet to come.

“This just in…the sudden death of Brianna Lee Nelson, girlfriend to AJ McLean of the Backstreet Boys, was ruled as a suicide by the Orlando Police Department late last night.  An autopsy report stated that a fatal gunshot wound to the head was the cause of death.  The latest information states that Brianna and AJ had recently had a disagreement earlier in the week, causing the unexpected break-up of the couple.  When AJ asked Brianna to leave, she did so, but not as peacefully as AJ had hoped.” The reporter stated.

“The tragic death of such a beautiful and well loved young lady comes as a shock to those who are close in the Backstreet community.   Funeral arrangements have been made.  The private ceremony will be held at an undisclosed location.  Any donations or flowers in the name of Brianna Lee Nelson may be made out and sent to The Firm, the management company for the Backstreet Boys.   You will see the telephone number and address come across your screen in just a moment.”

“We at Channel 9 News wish to extend our heartfelt prayers and thoughts to the family of the victim and all who were in relation to her.  Please keep the Nelson and McLean family in your prayers tonight.   This truly is a most tragic and unfortunate event.”
