Chapter 20
Brian was pacing back and forth in the waiting room, wondering what was happening with his wife. “I just don’t understand…” he mumbled.
Everyone looked to Kat and Liz for answers. “Look, we told you, everything was fine. We were laughing and joking…and then she said she had to go to the bathroom. The next thing ya know…she was laying on the ground…bleeding.” Kat said nervously.
“Where was she bleeding from?” Brian questioned angrily.
“I don’t know…I could hardly see her.” she answered.
“She was…” Liz tried to say, but was interrupted by the doctor.
“Mr. Littrell?” he asked softly.
“Yes…what is going on with me wife? Can I see her? Is she okay? What about the baby?” Brian stammered.
“Why don’t you come with me Mr. Littrell and we will talk about your wife.” he said quietly.
“NO, I am sorry…but I want to see Leighanne!” he shouted back and startled everyone.
“Now, Mr. Littrell, your wife is fine now, and she is resting comfortably. I will take her to you in a few minutes.” the doctor said softly and then motioned for Brian to follow him. However, Brian made a beeline for the nurse’s station to ask what room she was in.

“My God, why is it that every time something bad happens, I am somehow involved with it?” Liz asked, with tears trickling down her cheeks.
“Honey, it’s okay. The doctor said that Leighanne is okay. You see, there is nothing to worry about.” Nick smiled.
“Yeah, but you didn’t hear what he was going to tell Brian. Trust me Nick, from the looks of it, Brian is going to be in for a terrible shock. He didn’t see Leighanne, and he still doesn’t know what happened today.” Liz said softly as she buried her head into Nick’s shoulder for support.

“Leighanne honey, are you okay?” Brian whispered.
Leighanne was afraid to speak. She couldn’t even turn to look at Brian. Here she was, laying in a hospital bed, and her husband had the nerve to ask how she felt. After a minute of silence, Brian asked again.
“Baby, talk to me. Are you okay?”
She lay there thinking about how she was going to tell him how sorry she was. She had let him down, and he was so calm about it. “How do you think I am, Brian?” she asked coldly.
“Look, you are okay, and we can go home in a little while. You just are under too much stress right now, and it took its toll on you. Everything is fine…we will go back to the hotel and you will get some rest, and tomorrow will be a new day. I don’t want my precious wife and my child to be to be under so much stress, so I am going to have you flown back to Lexington, and you can stay with my mom and dad while we finish the tour. How does that sound.” Brian rambled, trying to comfort her.
“She didn’t make it.” Leighanne barely whispered.
“Who didn’t make what, hon?” Brian asked curiously.

Everyone had gone down to the cafeteria to get coffee while they waited. The doctors had said that Leighanne was fine, but they all knew that something was out of sorts. But, in the attempt to keep their minds off of it, everyone asked who won Brian and Nick’s basketball game.
“You should have seen it! I had this perfect three pointer…and here came Brok with a flying leap…and he ruined the entire shot! I couldn’t believe it! I lost to the munchkin!” Nick laughed as he banged his head on the table.
“Well Nick, at least you were beating by a guy, and not by Katie. Have you seen your daughter lately? She can put up some mean competition against your slam dunks there Nicky!” Howie laughed, as he explained how he had taken Katie to the court one day and ‘helped’ her make slam dunks.
“Yeah, well my little princess wasn’t there, so I shouldn’t have had any competition.” Nick smiled.
Suddenly, a teary eyed Brian walked into the room and stared at everyone. Everyone in the room looked at him, not sure of what was happening.
“Brian, what’s the matter man?” Nick asked, afraid of the answer.
Brian just sat there with his face in his hands, sobbing silently.
“Brian…come on, talk to us…is Leighanne okay? What’s going on?!” Kevin said, his voice full of fear.
“I shouldn’t have let her go.” he whispered as he collapsed to the floor.
Kevin and Nick rushed to his side to help him up. “Brian, come on man, here, sit here. What in the world is going on?” Kevin said as he and Nick put him into a chair.
“Leighanne is okay, but the baby…” Brian said with tears in his eyes. “…the baby didn’t make it.”
Everyone gasped and immediately started asking questions. “What happened?” “What do you mean the baby didn’t make it?” “Is Leighanne okay?” “How could something like this happen?” was all he heard over and over again. Brian was sick to his stomach thinking of what had happened. Not only was his wife devastated, but so was he.
“It wasn’t meant to be. God didn’t want us to have this baby.” Brian said, trying to keep his composure. “And, so, he took her from us.”
“It was a little girl?” Liz asked softly.
“Yes, and now my baby is dead. Dead!” Brian yelled as he left the room to go back to his wife.

“Leighanne?” he asked as he sat down in the recliner next to her bed.
She did nothing but roll over in the opposite direction. Leighanne was in pain, not physical, but mental. It was eating her up inside. The thought that God, the one that she and Brian had so much faith in, had taken their child, was unbearable. Silent tears streamed down her pale cheeks.
“Leighanne, honey, talk to me.” Brian pled.
“I have nothing to say.” she whispered with her back to him.
“Honey, it’s going to be okay. It just wasn’t meant to be.” he tried to console her.
With that, she rolled over and sat up in her bed. “Brian, it’s not that simple, we have lost a part of us. She was our little girl, even though she wasn’t born yet. Even though she was just a tiny little miniature version of us, still young in her development, she was part of us…and part of our lives. I don’t how it could be okay, Brian. I just don’t.” she said, with huge tears falling down her cheeks.
“Honey, I know that God does things for a reason. He wouldn’t have done this to be cruel or to hurt us. Maybe something was wrong with her, and He didn’t want anything to make her suffer. We just have to believe that He did the right thing. I know it will hurt for a very long time. But, it is all going to be okay. I love you sweetheart…I love you.” he said as he took her hand and then leaned in to kiss her forehead.
They just sat there holding each other for a while, as the rest of the gang waited patiently. They knew that this was all very hard for Brian and Leighanne. None of them had experienced this sort of grief. This had been totally unexpected, and now that Brian and Leighanne’s little world had come crashing down, they all needed each other more than words could express.
However, they were protected inside the hospital, but the expected happened, and the world suddenly became aware of the situation. The rumors and the news spread like wildfire, and it was up to the press and publicity people to contain the situation.
When the guys finally were allowed into Leighanne’s room, they all were greeted with the local news broadcasting the events of the day.
“Today at the LA Zoo, Ms. Leighanne Littrell, wife of pop star Brian Littrell of the Backstreet Boys, was found lying on the ground unconscious. Rumor has it that she was hemorrhaging as she came out of the public restroom. As far as this reporter can tell, Mrs. Littrell was rushed to Cedar Sinai Hospital where she later lost the unborn child that she was carrying. The best we can tell, Mr. Littrell was no where to be found. He later arrived at the hospital with best friend and band mate Nick Carter. No official word has come from Mr. Littrell or any of his band mates on the situation. As soon as we hear more details, we will update you all. Lorraine Vasquez, Channel 13 News.” the reporter finishes as Leighanne burst into sobs.
Everyone turned around to help her, but they soon found it was best for her to just let it all out.
“We are here for you two if you need us.” Nick offered.
“And I will get management to issue a statement, to hopefully shut up the reporters. The best I can say, be honest, but don’t give a lot of details.” Kevin said, taking some sort of control of the situation.
Within minutes, everyone was scrambling to their unspoken duties, while
Brian and Leighanne rested comfortably in peace.
