This part of my site isn't much, but might help you if you want to breed your Fish.


Live-bearer Fish are easy to breed and determind the sex. The pointed anal fin determinds the male. The fan-shaped fin determinds the female.



Cardinal Tetras are among the most beautiful fish and most difficult to breed as well. The following information is also true for Neon Tetras and related cousins. Many local pet stores claim theres no way to determind their sex. Thats not true. As you look at the image below, you can see the diffrence is quite clear. The male is slim in comparison to the round female. If theres a slim female, she'll be noticed as a stragler. The same is true for zebra fish.

M = Male
FM = Female

Banded Cichlid
--FM - Duller in color; Fins are shorter than males

Black Lined Tetra
--FM - Deeper body than male

Black Ruby Barb
--M -Pale deep red
--FM -Has bars

Black Widow Tetra
--M - slimmer than female
--FM - Heavy bodie; Bigger than male

Bloodfin Tetra
--FM - Heavier than male; Slighty less color in fins

Checkered Barb
--M - Brownish red fins; edged with black
--FM - Light brown fins; less body color than male

Cherry Barb
--M - Brown and black; reddish vertical region below region.
--FM - Chocolate brown on both sides; Silvery belly; Little or no color on fins

Dwarf Cichlid
--FM - Plain round fins; More yellow in body than male

Dwarf Gourami
--M - Blue neck
--FM - pale bars and fins

Flame/ Rio Tetra
--FM - Anal and front half of dorsal fin are edged with black

Giant Danio
--M - Almost red fins
--FM - Almost orange fins

Glass Fish
--M - Pointed swim blater twards the tail; darker in color
--FM - Round swim blater

Glow-Light Tetra
--Same as the Neon Tetra

Golden Tetra
--FM - Deeper, heavier body than male

Head-and-Tail-Light Tetera
--M - White spot on anal fish

Lemon Tetra
--FM - depper body; slighty less body color

Panchax Lineatus
--M - Series of purplish horisontal stripes; Dorsal and anal fins are green edged with bright red stripes on top and bottom
--FM - Green body with series of dark vertical bars.

Pelmatochromis Kribensis Boulenger
--M - Inch or so longer than female; darker body than female; horizontal stripe from body to mouth.
--FM - one dot st tail, two at dorsal fin

Pristella
--FM - considerably heavier than male

Rosy Tetra
--M - Dorsal fin is twice as long as the female

Tiger Barb
--M - Nose is cherry red
--FM - Slightly less intense

Zebra Fish/Danio
--M - Slime; very active
--FM - very round belly
