WHAT CAN CHRIST DO?
by Lasaro Flores

What can the Lord Jesus Christ do for you? Well, He can simply do everything that is for your good: There is nothing that God will deny you if you draw near to Him through His Son Jesus Christ. The promise of the Lord Jesus is that "whatsoever you shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you" (John 16:23). Therefore, confess with the Psalmist that "it is good for me to draw near to God" (73:28); and know that "my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19). Amen!

Perhaps at this moment, my dear friend, you find yourself without direction in your life, without hope, without purpose, without certainty of your future; and not only this, but all goes wrong, your life is one of frustration, and it makes no difference how you try to better your life, nothing works out! God be not willing, but you have even thought that it would be better not to be alive. But what you have probably done is to try to drown your miseries and anguish with alcohol, or use drugs to relieve your inward pain; or like so many, loosen the reins to the pleasures of sin and of the world. BUt still, nothing helps!

What can I tell you? Try the best you can? Or, stay away from your vices? Or even, start going to church? For sure, there are many things with which I could encourage you; and for sure, men have their philosophies and ideas. I don't deny that there could be some of these things that could help you to a certain extent, but I have to be honest with you and tell you the truth. Such things are like bandages that cover up the infected wound, but what is needed is the medicine that destroys the infection and heals the wound. What you are experiencing, my dear friend, are the symptoms of something worse, and that is, SIN; whether it be yours, or of others. Therefore, your only hope is not in man, or even a church, but solely, and absolutely, in the beloved Son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, who said in John 10:10: "I am come that they might life, and that they might have it more abundantly". In other words, what Christ can do for you is beyond what you can imagine. "But as it is written, Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love him" (1 Corinthians 2:9).

It is true, much of what the repentant sinner and believing saint in the Lord Jesus Christ will enjoy of the blessings that he has of God are in the future; notwithstanding, the one who has "repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ" (Acts 20:21), is rejoicing now in a life of abundance, because he can "consider how great things (God) has done for (him)" (1 Samuel 12:24). Yes, it is true, Christ Jesus can do great things for you; and if He doesn't do it in the temporal or physical, you can be sure that He will do it in the spiritual according to the blessed Word of God where the apostol Paul wrote: "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ" (Ephesians 1:3). Hallelujah!!!

Now, let us consider, at least, three things that Christ can do for you today; and my prayer is that "the God of all grace" (1 Peter 5:10) will be pleased to use this article to speak to your heart and convince you that the Lord Jesus Christ is your only hope for all that you need at this moment. Oh, my dear reader, there is no one like my Lord Jesus; I have tasted that He is good: "O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusts in him" (Psalm 34:8). I can tell you that "he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend" (Song of Solomon 5:16).

In the first place, Christ can give you a "new life". 2 Corinthians 5:13 tells us "therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new". In other words, when you go to the Lord Jesus by faith, and He comes into your life, in that moment you are changed radically. Oh, it's true that your physical appearance is the same, and also your social and economical position doesn't necessarily change, but in becoming "a new creature...in Christ", your personal relationship with God is changed forever. Now you have the power of God to live the abundant life that the Lord Jesus promised; and even when the child of God has problems in his/her life, yet they can still say that "in all these things we are more than conquerors through him tha loved us" (Romans 8:37). Yes, my dear reader, in Christ you may began a new life, with all the blessings that He has, if you come to Him confessing your sins and giving your life to Him so that He can fill it with His.

But, in the second place, Christ can also free you from your bondage in which you are because of sin; in other words, be "made free from sin" (Romans 6:22), and "the power of Satan" (Acts 26:18), and of the world; "for whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world" (1 John 5:4). That's why it is said in John 8:36: "If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed". There is no vice from which Christ cannot free you from; there is no iniquity that the Lord cannot subdue in your life (Micah 7:19); there is no habit that Christ cannot changed; and for sure, there's nothing that the Devil can try to do in your life to enslave you again, that Christ cannot conquer and give you the victory; for if Christ Jesus lives in you, "greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world" (1 John4:4). Yes, my dear friend, the one who draws near to God in His Son Jesus Christ "can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth (him)" (Philippians 4:13). Again, HALLELUJAH!!!

Furthermore, in the third place, what is more important for you, is that the Lord Jesus Christ can save you from your sins; that is, from the love of sin, from the penalty of sin, from the power of sin, and from the presence of sin. That is why it is said in Matthew 1:21 that Jesus "shall save his people from their sins", which consist of these four things, since "he is able to save them to the uttermost that come to God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them" (Hebrews 7:25). Yes, my dear friend, sin is the reason that you need a new life and to be made free of the life that you live without Christ Jesus; for if you are not saved from your sins, then your life is controlled by sin and the consequences of sin. But when you come to Christ for "a so great salvation" (Hebrews 2:3), in that moment you began a new and free life because the love of sin, the penalty of sin, and the power of sin was destroyed on the Cross at Calvary when He took your sins upon Himself to save you from your sins. But this is only true for the one that comes to Him repentant of their sins, believing in Him.

Now, how can these three things, that is, the new life, liberty, and salvation, be possible for one that finds himself in misery due to the life he's living, dejected because he can't change his life, and for sure, which is worse, when sin lifts up its horrible head and condemns him to a hopeless end? Here, my friend, is where the blessed hope of "the gospel of the grace of God" (Acts 20:24) comes in! In it we hear the blessed news that the beloved Son of God has come to bring Life, Liberty, and Salvation. Hallelujah!!! There is reason for rejoicing!

The promise that Christ can do something for you is based on His Death and Resurrection. The value of what He did for sinners, you and I, comes from the dignity of His Person, that is, His Death and Resurrection has power to change, to free, and to save those who cannot change, free, and save themselves on their own, because He is the only-begotten and beloved Son of the living God, or "Emmanuel, God with us" (Matthew 1:23). Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ has ALL power to accomplish ALL that we stand in need of, not solely for NOW, but also for all eternity. But this is only true when we deal with the root of the matter; and that is, SIN!; because sin is the cause of our misery, of our bondage, and of our condemnation.

First, we see that in His Death on the Cross, Christ not only died for our sins, but also He destroyed the power of sin, of the world, and of the devil over us when we believe in Him. a) "Our old man is crucified with him", (i.e. Christ), "that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin...for sin shall have dominion over you" (Romans 6:6,14). b) Christ said: "I have overcome the world" (John 16:33); therefore, "whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith. Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God" (1 John 5:4,5). c) But Christ also partook "of flesh and blood", i.e. became man, "that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is , the devil; and deliver them who fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage" (Hebrews 2:14,15); because "he that committeth sin is of the devil;...For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil" (1 John3:8). You see why it is necessary to apprpopriate by faith the Death of Christ; because "if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him" (Romans 6:8)?

Secondly, not only did Christ died, but He also resurrected from the dead; and HE IS ALIVE NOW!!! That's why, my dear friend, there is victory in the Lord Jesus Christ; that's why He can change lives, that's why He can set sinners free; and yes, that's why He can save from sin, because the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has accepted ALL that His beloved Son in His Life and Death has done for sinners; and His bodily Resurrection is the proof that ALL has been well done and acceptable before God. Therefore, every believer can say, and has the assurance, that God has made him "accepted in the beloved" (Ephesians 1:6). When the apostle Paul says of Christ that he "may know him, and the power of his resurrection" (Philippians 3:10), this tells us that there is power in the resurrected life that Christ gives us by faith in Him, being united to Him, and being in Him. Amen!

    a) Because Christ has resurrected, the power that God used to raise Him from the dead, is the same power that God wroughts to give us a new life in Christ (Ephesians 1:20; 2:5,6). b) Because Christ has resurrected, that power is the same that frees us from the bondage of the vices and bad habits that we have because of sin (2 Corinthians 5:13). c) Because Christ has resurrected, now He has the power to save us forever (Hebrews 7:25). In that case, my dear friend, if this is not true of you at this moment, then it is necessary for you to draw near to God before it's too late. Don't make any excuses, and don't let anything keep you from crying out to Him: "God, be merciful to me a sinner" (Luke 18:13).

Maybe someone will say: "I don't understand all of these things that I have read". Well, let me say this to you: Maybe you might not understand much of what I have written in this article, but one thing I ask God to give you: The conviction that you need the Lord Jesus Christ in your life, if it is that He doesn't live in you: "And this is the record, that God has given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that has the Son has life; and he that has not the Son has not life" (1 John 5:11,12). Therefore, it is not so much that you understand all that I have written, but that you know that Christ live in you. The apostle John wrote: "These things have I written to you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that you may know that you have eternal life..." (v.13); and if you do not know, then you are in very great danger___, YOU are still lost in your sins, "having no hope, and without God in the world" (Ephesians 2:12), and on the way to an eternity in that awful place called "the lake of fire"; for "whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire" (Revelation 19:15).

Are you tired of your life? Are you tired of your bondage? Are you tired of your hopelessness? Come by faith to the Lord Jesus Christ as He invites you: "Come to me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and you shall find rest into your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:28-30). May this now be true of you this day! Tomorrow may be too late!
