Creating ‘logical drives’ on a Network or Drive Mappings
As mentioned above DRIVE letters in Novell often refer to subdirectories of a hard drive and they are
created by the MAP command. If you type MAP by itself then you will be given a list of the current
drive and search mappings. If you are connected to the network try it.
For example:
MAP G:=F:\WINAPPS\WORKS would associate the drive letter G: with the subdirectory
F:\WINAPPS\WORKS. Whenever we type the drive letter G:, it is effectively the same as
issuing the CD\WINAPPS\WORKS.
MAP S:=F:\SYSTEM would associate the drive letter S: with the subdirectory F:\SYSTEM.
Whenever we type the drive letter S:, it is effectively the same as issuing the CD\SYSTEM.
MAP H:=F:\HOME\%LOGIN_NAME would associate the drive letter H: with the users home
subdirectory, which is different for every user and determined by the users LOGIN NAME.
%LOGIN_NAME is a Login script variable (see Appendix 2 for more Login script
variables). If I log in as SUPER01, then H: will stand for the subdirectory F:\HOME\SUPER01,
whereas if I log in as USER04 then H: will stand for subdirectory F:\HOME\USER04.
It is a very good idea to use a modification of the above when using this command. This is the MAP
ROOT = command. For example, MAP ROOT G:=F:\WINAPPS\WORKS.
This command means that F:\WINAPPS\WORKS is the ROOT directory of drive G:. This means
that if users type CD.. or CD\, it will have no effect and not change the drive mapping.
For Example
MAP G:=F:\WINAPPS\WORKS
CD.. [drive G: has changed to F:\WINAPPS]
CD\ [drive G: has changed to F:\]
MAP ROOT G:=F:\WINAPPS\WORKS
CD.. [drive G: is still F:\WINAPPS\WORKS]
CD\ [drive G: is still F:\WINAPPS\WORKS]
